Default 964 or 965 ?????

HI guys,

just had an interesting conversation with a (supposedly top-notch) Porsche mechanic who spent some time correcting me that what I really own is a 965 Turbo!
Now I've always called it a 964 turbo, and my specialty is more vintage Shelby cars, to be honest, but I *think* I know what I have.

What DO I own?

vin# WP0AC2966RS480XXX
built 10/1993
engine: M6450-61R
transmission:G5057-20

potato, potahhto.

it's like a guy with a 930 saying he has a 911 turbo.

if I were you I'd tell everyone you have a "turbo 3.6" and look down on people who don't know what it is

Slippery slope on that one. 965 was a stillborn internal project at Porsche

(from Wiki..The Porsche 969 was a concept based on the 964 platform. It was to be the successor of the 930 turbo model.
The car was conceived in 1982, as a twin-turbo 911 with four-wheel drive and double-overhead camshafts. The project received the in-house code 965 and was developed along with the new, 964 generation of the 911. However, the intended engine (a 3,3 litre, 374 hp flat-six) could not be used due to cooling problems.)

That being said, parts for the 964 Turbo models are stamped 965..

He is wrong no matter how you look at it, as you have either a 964 turbo, or a 965.. The turbo would be implied in the 965, as it is the turbo version of the 964.

Wiki was quoting an article by Karl Ludvigson, as an excerpt from the book "Porsche-Excellence was Expected". The original article was in Excellence magazine in June 2005

Here is the link http://www.flachbau.com/Documents-Media/965_Master.pdf

964 Turbo, no doubts whatsoever. Some specific parts are marked 965 since they were developed for the stillborn 965. Just have a look at your car documentation, identification plates, etc ... 965 is never mentioned.

Oh... I am sorry, you are correct but your answer was not in the form of a question!

All my docs say 964 T or 911 turbo
