Default Opinions of this car?

Hi guys, I've been wanting a 94 Turbo for some time and have learned a lot from the collective wisdom of this forum. I've located a car and wanted to get your thoughts; here's its story:

-- Two owner car bought new by a doctor who sold it a few years ago. Second owner died and left it to his son, who has not driven it much in the last few years, but has started it up and driven it a few miles each week.

-- 26,000 miles, completely stock except for H&R springs.

-- Car is on consignment and dealer says no accidents, body damage, or rust

-- All services performed regularly and car comes with all records

-- Engine is original and has had no work except recent belt service

-- Original Speedlines recently sent to Germany for refinishing

-- Asking price is $70K

-- Dealer says interior is a "9" and exterior is a "7 or 8." Paint is good except for a few spots where clear coat has worn through and some paint chips on nose, which was resprayed a few years ago. A few pics attached.

It seems to fit my goal for a mostly original, low mileage 94 in good condition, and I will get a PPI if I decide to move forward, but I am wondering:

I want the best quality driver I can find for $60 to $70K, tops. If this car checks out, do you think $70K is a fair price?

Anything else I should ask the dealer before I line up a PPI? Car is not nearby, so i would have to rely on the PPI and I won't have the opportunity to drive it.

Thanks for any suggestions or comments

peter

Did you see the other thread on here posted by someone else looking at the very same car?:

It looks good - just make sure you get a full inspection carried out by someone who knows about 964 turbos.

I think it is a fair price, indeed. I gave a lot more for my 3.3 which is in just a slightly better condition and with just the half of the mileage. So I think you should go for it!

Me too, I haven't seen those before either, but I think it is a very good idea when you have sport seats.

I think the price is fair...what can you compare it to? The 3.6 Tubos are collectible to the point that the old axiom would seem to apply: "you cant pay too much just maybe too soon". Nice examples (OEM, low miles driven) of these cars will continue to appreciate, the passage of time will validate your purchase price. Go for it! I am curious to learn more about the seat protectors.

Those bolsters look quite large. Are those OEM sport seats or something?

There is a major service on these cars at 30k miles.

If the car checks out and there aren't a lot of 3.6s on the market right now, then I would say that the price is fair.

Does anyone know what 30K service entails and what is typical cost? I searched the board and was unable to find the answer. Still trying to line up PPI. I'll talk to the dealer tomorrow and let the group know what I find out about the seat bolsters. Thanks for any additional info...peter

$1,750 +/- for the service.

Those are the stock sport seats.

Here is what I did:

- Contact the local PCNA chapter where the car is located (they usually have a website)
- Look at the advertisements for the independent Porsche centers in the area (Main dealers don't have the sort of experience with air cooled cars you need)
- Post the names of the independent shops on rennlist and inquire as to people's experiences with them. I'd post the same question on the 964 turbo and 964 forum.
- Speak to at least two of the independents and decide which one you feel more comfortable with. I would insist on a written summary with compression and leak down. I would also ask them to go over the car with a paint gauge.

Feel free to send me a PM - I just bought a car long distance and would be happy to help further if required.

Good luck!

I'd be keen to see underneath those bolsters, just to make sure they don't hide anything untoward. Apart from that looks great, best colour combo available

YYC930: thanks for cost info on 30K service costs Do you know what the 30K service includes?

Frank 993 C4S: thanks for your suggestions too: I contacted local PCA and am trying to identify some shops with aircooled experience.

biglicks: good idea--I'll find out if bolsters are hiding anything!

Generally you do a valve adjustment, change plugs, oil and filter change, change brake fluid (every 2 years), air filter and aux air injection filter, probably fan belts, and a huge list of overall visual checks.........plus whatever else they find.

Spoke with dealer--seat bolster covers were a factory option but weren't on the option list, so they're pretty rare, apparently. The original owner was a collector and knew about some of the "off the menu" options.
