Performance of my 15 year old 3.3.... and 0-100 against a 997S
Yesterday I took my car on its very first test track day, dry, temperatures around 30C/ 90F. Here's what happened:
- Terminal speed on 1 mile runway: although my speedo hit 180, the digital track display showed 168! That's exactly the brochure speed when the car was new in 1992 - now has 80,000 miles on the clock. The car pulled very cleanly to redline in every gear, smooth turbo action on gearchange (reassuring blow off, no lag)
Did some standing starts against some modern exotica:
- Aston Martin DB9 (I guess it was standard as it was a 1997 model) left me standing and never caught it up. That said, it was the first drag of the day, and I didn't get a good launch.
- 996 GT3, he got off the line way quicker to around 50 but then didn't open the gap any further until we hit the first corner. Again my launch was low revs.
- Asked a 450bhp 996 turboS for the pleasure: I got a better launch this time (4K clutch drop). He got a 2 car length advantage immediately, but the acceleration was surprisingly close, to about 115mph when he had increased to around 4-5 car lengths.
- 997 3.8S: I perfected my take-off (drop clutch at 6K! These cars can take it!! Hot track and tyres ) and even though he got off very slightly quicker after first gear, I was neck and neck, changed into 2nd and my car lurched ahead, and slightly further ahead on each gear change. Hit the brakes at around 110 and was several cars ahead.
- 996 3.4 C2: I had it all the way, including top speed. I had my standing start sorted by this time.
PS: I was by the far the oldest car there.
PPS: Highest vmax of the day was a Ruf Rt12 at 207mph!!!
And that was faster than the CarerraGT there with 193

YYC,
Why lucky? Surely you're not saying I'll smoke my clutch? Aren't these cars over-engineered?
I did several high rev drops and no smells, or probs.
My only problem was the small I/C pipe came off twice, fixed it in the end before all the above fun.
Hi Richard,
At Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome, by Pistonheads, very short notice.
Are you still getting my emails? Several P events coming up over next month or so...

911addict.......
Keep doing that and a 930/965 will eventually either smoke it's clutch and/or blow one or both of the half shafts off the transaxle. I've seen guys do it in as little as "ONE" drag racing type start such as you were doing. If you blow a half shaft off you are lucky......a flat deck to the mechanic, a few bolts and an hour of shop time fixes it..........a clutch OTOH is probably 1,000 quid in your neck of the woods.
Don't get me wrong......I am truly surprised that one of the above didn't happen after the numerous runs you made.......that's all.
It's fun......!!! Isn't it.

These cars aren't drag racers but it appears you held your own well considering you are basically stock with less hp in most cases. I would not drop my clutch at 6k although I doubt you will brake a half shaft with close to stock torque and HP. Most of the guys breaking half shafts are pumping out over 500hp and torque and doing the same thing but you never know.

168 is a great speed
A couple of corrections - the temperature was more like 21degC
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/ukweath...07review.shtml
The distance on the straight to the timing beam is 1.5 miles
The CGT has a Cd of 0.396 and a CDA of 0.768, the RT12 will be more like 0.33CD and 0.65CdA -makes a big difference at these speeds. The CGT runs in to a proverbial aerodynamic brick wall over 190mph, but the trade off is unmatched high speed stability (taking nothing away from the RT12 -awesome bit of kit )

Clutches and axles are consumables IMO
I didn't need to let the clutch out at that high rpm though in my 930, more like 3800. Anyway, what do I know, I got beat by a Mini...
