This relay is £480 (a special order non returnable part) and my guy is not sure if it's gone. (Could be a bad earth somewhere)

I doubt it that, however it is the relay that has to see the flywheel spinning to enable the fuel pumps and ignition.
Check the Hall effect sensor on the flywheel; it plugs into a jumper that goes directly into the EZ 69. The plug end disintegrates and you lose that signal.
