New "Texan" owner of a 150k+ miles 964

If all goes well I will join the 964 soon.

I let slip a 90k miles C4 coupe a few weeks ago (because to be 911s are only coupe rear wheel drive) and still had nightmares about the decision.

Then I found this 1992 C2 with more than 150k miles.

Scary!

My previous car, a 1992 NSX, had 106k miles and I thought it was a lot!
Then again time passes and sometimes it's better that a car is driven than staged (if properly maintained).

The car has some rust at the bottom of the rear windshield sides, suspension arms/bolts, the very thin sides above the exhaust. Nothing structural.

The engine has had a power steering rack replaced as well as clutch and flywheel replaced last year together with some seals. No engine rebuild that I know of.

Maintenance receipts go back to 1992 (good thing right?).

Oil. It leaks oil, of course, it's a 911! My dad's 1977 Carrera 3.0 leaked oil all the time. About a quarter every 4 months.

The PPI said that it needs a new oil cooler ($1.2k) and the replacement of some other seals ($2k) to "chase the leaking". He didn't say fix as you never know with a car with such high mileage.

I am reading about all these astonishing engine rebuilds. Until I drive it / do a leakdown test I will not take a decision, but they are $cary! :)

Can't way to get her, to me the 964 is THE 911.

Cheers!

welcome to the high mileage club.
92 c2 with 153k miles and counting here. Original motor. not a single problem. you will be just fine especially with the new clutch.

were you intended to replace the nsx with 964? They are two very different cars. Would be great if you can share some thoughts on these two cars when you get some miles down with your new 964

I will for sure!

I will keep my site updated (spam here... :) ) with the info. For now I only have the review of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and the Challenger Hellcat

Oil coolers are $500-600 last time I checked, but I've never heard of one failing unless it was punctured. Make sure you don't just need the tstat to oil cooler lines replaced. They often leak and soak the outside of the cooler in oil.

+1 Good call. Next step is to use your new friends on the forum to find a good 964 wrench local to you, that will make all the difference. Best of luck and welcome!

Very true and I accept recommendation for a good shop in a 100miles radius from Houston, TX.

The only ones I know are Modern Aircooled in Houston.

Find Haas Folge. He's the man for Air-cooled in Houston area.

I know him through the PCA.

Call Warren at Rennsport in Sealy. Mike Callas' protege. He will take great care of you.

HDA 04-26-2017 10:45 AM

Thank you all for the kind words!

I think Warren will be seeing my 964 as I heard his name from 3 different good sources...

One thing is sure: I will not need to worry to have a cooling hose split at a trackday like it did on my NSX. :)
