Mexican1000 (Rothsport 964 build)

I think you'll see a long term relationship developing between Rothsport and Tuthill.
Jeff and the crew is on the way.
Randy Wells is part of the Wednesday crew. I hadn't talk to him in a long time. Both he and I spent many an evening yakking on Pelican and the Rennlist back in the beginning. I was Cary on both Pelican and Rennlist. I lost Cary on Rennlist on one of the server upgrades.

A big congrats to Jeff Zwart, Cameron Healy, Jeff Gamroth, and Carl Van Austen for finishing 3rd and 4th in the Vintage class of the 2017 NORRA Mexican 1000 race in Baja this week. These were the first Porsche 911s to finish this toughest of rallies during the event’s 50 year history! It ran 1000 miles from Ensenada to Cabo and touched both coasts.
I was privileged to be the team photographer and videographer for the seven day trip. And what a trip it was! This was one of the most epic adventures I've been on. The visuals and stories that came out of this experience are out of this world. Everything was covered by the team and myself in stills and video. Look for a published feature article and film in the near future...

Rothsport Facebook page
From Jeff Zwart:
Amazing result in the Mexican 1000 for Rothsport Racing! In a race that over half the cars did not finish, BOTH cars arrived 1200 miles later! The first time a production based 911 has made it to the finish in its 50 year history. Fantastic build and crew lead by Jeff Gamroth kept these cars on the road running every 900+ stage miles! 3rd and 4th in class!
THE MAN!!!!

Awesome build and story.
Out of curiosity, why are the windshield wipers removed? I would think they would be critical cleaning the dirt and debris off the windscreen with some washer fluid. Too much weight?

Great Q&A with Gamroth and Zwart
Zwart says: For me, in my world, if I can do something in a 911, it’s just... more... it validates it better for me? Naturally, you’re kinda concerned that it’s actually a ‘good choice,’ but they seriously built two amazing cars. They’re pretty much Cup Car standards when you look at what they are, and we literally had no mechanical issues whatsoever. Went through the whole event on one set of tires.
Jalopnik: So the plan is to keep running these cars?
Gamroth: “Oh yeah, we’re gonna keep running with ’em!”
Gamroth: “The main thing was getting stuck. Because of our ground clearance and two-wheel drive. We didn’t have enough time to get the four-wheel drive developed enough.
These cars started out as C4s, and we turned em back to two-wheel mainly because of gearing. We couldn’t buy gears for the four-wheel drive front, ring and pinions, and you can’t get away with stock gears. They’re too tall. Maybe you could have, but, based on what I know now, I’m glad we went the way we went because gearing is important.”

The Porsches competed in the Vintage Production Car class, put down 320 horsepower, weighed around 3,200 pounds, packed nine inches of suspension travel and hit 106 mph over dirt according to one of the drivers.
