I have a 964 that gives some kind of rather loud clunking sound when reversing. I have really no idea where it comes from. When going forward in 1st gear there is no sound. I don't think there was this sound before a big engine repair when I also installed a single mass flywheel.

Any ideas what to check to find out what is causing this?

I would first check the cv joints and motor mounts.

Or pads rocking in calipers when changing direction.

Is your car a turbo ?
The G50 /52 trans does this when backing with wheel turning direction .it is the limited slip lock up ....normal some GM positraction lube addictive helps.

Haven't had the calipers off recently have you? Worth checking they are secured correctly.
