Headlight chime - a feature on any 964?

I did a road trip this weekend and drove during the day with the headlights on. I forgot to turn them off after the run and only just had enough juice to start the car, four hours later.

It seems like a good idea to fit a warning system. Maybe a buzzer that sounds when the door is open and lights are on.

Did any 964 have a headlight chime as standard? If it did I can avoid reinventing the wheel.

my '91 has a chime.

Jjm4life 10-16-2016 10:25 AM

As does my '90

Rocket Rob 10-16-2016 12:55 PM

Both my 90 & 91's have chimes.

crg53 10-16-2016 01:01 PM

Same here on my 91.

Thanks for the feedback. What Country builds are your cars? Mine are Singapore and New Zealand.

Porsche930 10-16-2016 02:14 PM

My 90 Targa behaves differently - when the key is removed from the ignition/starter switch, I can have parking lights only regardless of whether the rotary light switch is turned to the first or second stop position. In addition, there is no chime in either stop position.

I also re-read the owner's manual, but there is no mention of chime for lights except for the safety seat belt buzzer. My car is a tourist delivery (900) in Germany for California (C03) so I am not sure if that might cause any differences from many of your cars in N. America.

My chime usually stops as soon as I remove the key from ignition. But if the key is toggled a little sometimes it doesn't work even with key in ignition. How loose / worn out is your key - mine is pretty worn.

No chime in my US 89. I've also managed to forget my headlights once. Got lucky and the car barely started like you.

It appears that non chimed cars have a R12 bridge Part Number 964.610.184.01 under the left hand side of the dashboard (I gather that's for LHD cars, maybe different for RHD). Changing this with part number 928.618.103.03 adds a chime.

The gong relay is located under the left hand side of the dashboard, according to the manual. No sign of it on either of my cars.

I'd love to do this mod to mine as well.

It's a '90 Swiss car with no chime.

Photos from the Dutch Porsche forum. No sign of any of these parts on my car.

Well... in 1991 nothing changed for Swiss car, I can confirm.

me61ic 10-18-2016 02:35 PM

It's only in US/Canada cars, it was compulsory over there in those years, not so in the ROW

I do have a chime but do we really need it? Don't we always turn around and admire our cars at least a few times every time we park and leave them? Then we will see if the lights are on! :)

creaturecat 10-19-2016 02:23 PM

the daylight driving lights feature is enabled via the simple installation of a relay.
perhaps the chime works accordingly? dunno.

Ale_72 01-15-2017 03:02 AM

Next week I should receive the buzzer.
Does anybody can point me to the right under-dash place where I should find the socket to install the buzzer on a 1991 c4cab with no airbag?
I tried to look but the only "free socket" I was able to identify was this one.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah, me too- no chime in my 90 and I've had several close calls... How to add?

How to add seems to be easy. It's a plug-in buzzer.
Where to plug it in... Well... That I do not know. :banghead:

Hi Ale, is it not the white relay holder we see on your picture ? It seems yes.

faf 964 01-16-2017 03:20 PM

I found this picture on an other forum. It looks like a 964 without airbags, before 1992.
For me it is the one we see on your picture. You can see a bridge in metal which needs to be removed before plugin the chime.

I's say so but I wanted a few people more patting my shoulder telling me: "do it, that's the right place" :D

True. Wondering why mine is in that such nice position with even a lower support for the buzzer and in other pictures looks to be randomly left around.
I could have understood this difference on a Brit car, not in a German one :)

Ale_72 01-20-2017 06:37 AM

A quick update.
yes, that was the plug.
Once removed the metal tab and inserted the chime everything worked perfectly.
i am really pleased with the result.
