As most have replied on here the tranny would be the deciding factor for me.

To me I would pick by tranny first.

I would never consider an automatic 964 or 993.

And it not because the auto is not capable of performing well it is just that I drive my 964 for fun and a big part of the fun factor is rolling the gears.

My daily drivers are all autos cause sitting in traffic is not fun with a manual.

I totally agreed about the "fun" factor from shifting and in particular in down shifting into a corner and hearing the whining from the exhaust & engine.

Okay. I want to thank you everyone who has provided me your invaluable input. I'm meeting
with the seller of the 5-speed seller this Thursday. Stay tuned if I end up bringing it back home :-)

My only beef with the cab is aesthetic. Doesn't look great when it's down. But I might be biased as I have a 1991 964 Targa C2...

I can make my tip car down shift in all the corners I just have more ways to do it. I can run it with the manual gate or with varing degrees of throttle input ie how fast and how far I push the throttle. The beauty of the tip I never miss a shift or over rev the engine. I am biased that is for certain I just have to defend tip cars. The only time I miss a clutch is if I want to do a burn out which I don't ever do. I have seen to many people f~~k up their **** going that.

John, I have never driven a tip so it's great to learn from you, an actual enthusiast, on what a tip can do in a cornering situation. I am going to Google and see if I can find out video footages of owners driving their tips. I like the idea of not over rev the engine and I never drop the clutch either. I gather the only way to really find out about tips full potential is to get some serious times on the driver seat. Thanks for your input on this subject.

Ah yes I have similar thoughts likes you about the cabriolet when the top is down. I like targa more in a 964 but 993 is relatively newer and perhaps has more advanced/improved features or technologies (eg no valve adjustment needed & improved suspensions and brakes) but there is no roll bar targa in 993. I don't like the sliding glass version and can't afford a 991...So I'm somewhat torn between the two subject line cars and their trade off. Sighs...

As the owner of a 90 C4 targa five speed, I suggest that you buy a 90 C4 targa five speed.

Targa !

Great versatile car, top overhaul is cheaper than a convertible, manual transmission will be cheaper if overhaul is needed, still a 3.6 and a better body style. 993 Tip. is a dog to drive, plus no one wants a 993 Tip cab, just look at the classifieds, always plenty to choose from. Re-sale should always be a purchase choice consideration.

Any photos of the cars in question?
