Default Targa Advice

Looking to get into the air-cooled arena and could use some help. I know the coupe is the preferred style but I like the idea of open-air motoring in the targa. I've been searching the net trying to find some reviews comparing the targa to the coupe but have not found any. Suggestions or comments from personal experience or links to any reviews or comparisons out there?

Secondly, given the fewer production numbers, if anyone has any leads on cars that would be much appreciated. Located in Northern CA but open to car location. Thanks!

Targas leak, but that shouldn't be an issue where you are. I have one and love it but the roof will bring problems and expense.

targa's have their own quirks but once you remove top none of that matters. I just sold a 964 targa - best targa I've ever owned.

There's always going to be people that rag on the targa. It's just personal preference. I've had 2 in the past - a '76 & an '84. The '76 leaked a little in heavy rain which it didn't see often. The'84 never leaked. The wind noise can be an issue sometimes, especially if the seals or the top itself is not in good shape. I've never driven a coupe so I can't compare, but there's nothing like driving with the top off. A well taken care if example will be a great car in my opinion.

Targas are fun, but I just think they ruin the classic line that attracts me to 911s. With that said, the 964 Targa is by far the best looking in my opinion. I had a 1984 Targa about 9 years ago and you will likely sacrifice leaks and wind noise for the open air experience. The targa bar is positioned far enough behind the seats that the car feels like a full convertible while driving.

I'm preferential to the soft window targas of the late 60's and the silver roll bar of the middies, specifically 1974. That being said the 964 is the best/last of the real targas regarding a total air cooled experience.

I started trying to track them all down a while back. https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...ga-thread.html

Personally, when I think of the 911 I think of a Targa. It's sort of nice owning the last of the last.

As the owner of a '72, '86' and '90 Targa as well as a number of coupes I would say that the experiences are different. I find both very satisfying. The Targa as has been noted has more wind noise and will leak. Top maintenance and seals are a consideration as these cars are getting older. There are sources to get the tops rebuilt, not inexpensive, but remember that even when new these had more noise and did leak. If one is looking for an open air experience they are a great choice. Better than the classic 911 body cabs in my opinion. And this is the perfect time of year to take advantage of one.

964 Targas are getting a caché all of their own. The shape of that back window is a miracle of form and function. And many fewer were made so the days when a Targa was priced well under a coupe have gone.

The roof leaks but with me its only during a serious downpour. Ordinary rain is fine. And trust me, I'm from the UK!

Good luck with the search. Find a good one - low miles, history and few owners - and you won't regret it.

Here's mine. It too is a UK car. It seems to be a rare bird as it barely leaks and has negligible high speed wind noise. I love it.

Does it creak? My leaks have improved and the wind noise is bearable but the roof does creak for the first few miles.

Thanks guys, great tips and experiences here. I'm now in full-swing looking for one so if anyone has any leads, please don't hesitate to send them my way.

With re: the top leaking and rattles, etc. hopefully that won't be a problem for me as I never intend to drive with the top on here in sunny CA!
