This just came across my yahoo homepage, I apologize if it's a repost, didn't see it on here yet. I'm pretty sure we've all been through this once or twice :)

I think the problem is he had the 911R-style stripes on the hood but didn't continue them on the roof or rear of the car. It must have thrown off the car's balance.

Someone please explain like I'm 5 years old what the driver did wrong and what should have been done to avoid this situation. I have zero track experience and have never driven any car above 8/10ths.

Weight transfer to the front, probably lift of oversteer? Super common in these cars if so...

slowing down (either brakes or more likely just lifting foot off the pedal quickly) while turning into the corner. the engine has gone straight on..

shift lock?

As mentioned weight transfer was the cause, the reason why can only be confirmed by the driver.

In beginners terms.,

Generally speaking, simple terms, you need to get all of your braking done in a straight line before you get to a corner, and be on a balanced throttle before you turn in.

He could have turned in under braking, and/or lifted off the brake to get on the throttle to late the weight transfer and no drive to the rear wheels upsets the car.

I'm not with you, AC 911 need trail braking to carry weight to the front in order to avoid understeer.

Would you recommend to a beginner who has never been on track to trail brake a 1990's 911?

I used beginners terms which are fundamentally sound, yes trail braking is an option, with any car, not just an AC 911 but its more advanced and its use depends on many factors including the corner your tackling and car setup.

Find your local Porsche club or SCCA club and attend an autocross. Gauranteed you'll be going through cone gates arse-first in no time...
