Crazy or there's a mint green coupe in there

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...3929427728.jpg
You might guess crazy but that's ok. I want her back to mint green and decided I wanted to see as much of her in original paint so wet sand away the blue makes a good guide coat

Goughary 08-09-2016 05:40 PM

Keep going!!!!!

onceover 08-09-2016 05:41 PM

Amazing that someone would paint over such a unique color

Nylasurf 08-09-2016 05:41 PM

Bring back the minty goodness - looks like a winning scratch off lottery ticket

JohnK964 08-09-2016 06:05 PM

believe it or not

Who ever did this to her didn't even use primer

tjb616 08-09-2016 07:02 PM

And if they didn't use primer, maybe the didn't prep the original paint by sanding... You might be able to sand down to the original clear coat. Wax, polish, original paint! :roflmao:

Streetdaddy 08-09-2016 08:14 PM

Probably couldn't give away a mint green 964 10 years ago!

02m2 08-09-2016 08:21 PM

Looking forward to seeing this come back together in all its minty goodness .

No such luck also the windows were taken out when painted blue I think in 1998 so for now I sand it drive it mostly drive and will take apart in the winter

hockenheimr 08-10-2016 12:29 AM

Keep on going! 964 windows for the most part just pop out...literally. The only one you might have to cut the seal on is the rear. The door windows don't have to be removed as the frame between the window and paint also just pops out and is held in by metal clips.

Good luck!

Now that is something I haven't considered but not immediately opposed to and will give it some thought as I continue my insanity of wet sanding away:thumbsup:

bweSteve 09-15-2016 12:38 PM

Hey John, pretty soon you're gonna feel the urge to start taking lower valances off, mirrors off, sunroof felt off, wiper blades off, etc.... but be careful as that is a slippery slope.

Whether you are still driving it around town now or not, is not mine to judge, but I'm guessing based on your prowess, that you have no problem grabbing milk from your local market,... and giggling when a neighbor gets to say "I see you've got a bit more done there Johnny!"... All great to think about ... (at least in its current state of progression, you can still drive it!)

But eventually you'll have to make a decision on how to finish the wet sanding along all the transition edges to all those pieces/areas mentioned above. Now might be a good time to make a connection and start a dialog, either with a buddy who has a paint booth, or with a paint shop that would be willing to make that final spray you'll need. Take them along on the journey with you too. It will make for a wonderful ending.

.... unless of course you are building that paint booth yourself in your own garage. Which I would NOT put it past you to give that a go!

Keep up the enthusiasm & stoke!!

Greatest. Color. Ever.
I'd run over a herd of nuns and puppies to get my hands on a mint green 964.

But, not as good as, say, a midnight blue 996 C4S. So, perhaps we should just trade even up?
I won't even ask for additional $ to even up the trade because, hey, we're brothers man, amirite?

Keep us posted. If you were in the S'west, I'd come to your house and spend a day sanding, just to say I had a hand in the restoration.

Nice work, I can't wait to see the end result. I'll be repainting as well.
I noticed you are using a long Dura-Block to wetsand.
Are you using sticky back paper? If so, what brand are you using & what grit are you using?
I ask because some sticky backs don't hold up to wet sanding.
Thanks

Thanks I have to say it is a nightmare removing the old sealant from the window channels. Nothing chemically would soften or remove the crap so scrape and sand and etching primer

We gently use a rotary wire brush in an angle grinder. Any pitted areas are then locally grit blasted before etch and prime.

You're doing a great job keep it up!

Just lovin' that Talia is getting this attention from you. It's like she was ailing a bit & you're breathing life back into her,... and of course there's someone smiling at you from above the entire time. ;)

Same applies really.
Try the twisted wire wheel, but do be careful and use leather gloves with stout overalls and a full face mask.

The other item we use is a Roloc air-powered mini-disc sander which comes with various attachments including grinding/sanding and scotchbrite pads that quickly screw on the face.

Sounds scary sticking that wheel on a angle grinder 😬 and putting it in a tail light housing. I appreciate your advice though more importantly though your encouragement and positive comment

John,
What type of etching primer did you use around the windshield? Is this a two part zinc-chromate type primer or rattle can primer? What brand are you using?

I just used rattle can for now. Not knowing when I'd get her to paint I didn't want to leave it uncovered for rust to start. I by laziness left some bare metal showing on another part of car and it had signs of it flash rusting and had to resand it. Depending on what the painter says it might get sanded back off its a pretty thin coat. As for the brand it is Dupli Color from Orielieys.

Wow, this is going to be beautiful when you are done.

A914MAN 05-08-2017 04:13 PM

I'm a fan of chemical stripping, but it's a hassle. One trick I use is to lay plastic film over the stripper which slows down evaporation and forces the chemical into the paint.

If you are going to the trouble of repainting it's seems so much more thorough to strip 'er down.

Thanks for the input I on the other hand am not a fan of Chemical stripping. My car was badly painted blue with no primer over the mint green in about 1998. Windows in bad taping etc. I am a fan of the factory anti corrosion and I really only need to remove as much blue as possible and respray the mint green leaving as much factory paint intact as possible

^^ in this case with Talia, I agree John. Certainly it is the more painful, elongated process for sure.

But that is why we are all CHEERING for you to continue taking your time. Well,... there's ONE guy in particular who is cheering the loudest along side you in that garage, that's for sure.

You must have been one HELLOVA Dad John,... the patience of a Saint!! Keep on it!

Someday soon, you are going to bring that delicious Mintiness to a car show, & I am going to DRIVE to come see it in person.

Sunroof

Well I finally got brave and tackled the sunroof was actually quite easy an I am happy I did found a small amount of surface rust under the piece that goes across the front of the opening so I sanded wire wheeled it and put etching primer on it. All I have left is the drivers side door jam and the jam on the door it's self.

I still have to weld up a rust spot on left front fender disassemble left door and sand the jams for it. Also I have a small dent in right rear fender and left front fender to fix. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will haul it to where the painting will be done 😁👍.

Porschenut_Lee 06-12-2017 06:44 PM

John,

I'm excited to see this car with a fresh coat of mint paint. You will have yourself a very special car for a number of reasons. The car will pay you back tenfold in smiles for the patience you have had with her. I applaud your tenacity!

To hot

I thought I'd be painting by now but unfortunately it decided to go all global warming on us here. It has been near a hundred almost every day since I got primer which makes it to dam hot for me to paint. It looks like that the heat will stay around for at least another week or more. 😫😫😫😫

The VIN on the frunk tag being "WP0ZZZ...". US/North American cars have other data in 4-6. :)

My '91 starts WP0BB2, for example.

I have been under the impression that the vin in the frunk was always WPOZZZ the other areas a pillar sticker in the left door jam are WPOAB-- But I did just recently see a picture if a 93 that the vin in the frunk started WPOAB--

I did this little excitement to make sure all would go well😥. It didn't quite work out. I can see faint scratches in the Mint Green. Madd me sad but happy I hadn't sprayed the rest of the car. I need to go back over the car with 600 grit shouldn't take long though. Not that big of a deal especially since we had tons of smoke from the MT fires and my eyes have felt like sand paper.
Raining now so smoke is gone 👍

rkwfxd 09-15-2017 09:32 PM

That's too bad. FWIW I just watched that 30 minute video by Larry from AmmoNYC or is it NYCAmmo.... anyway, it was very detailed and covered the paint part of the full restoration of his 964C4. One thing that stood out to me is that they went down to 800 grit paper on the primer just to ensure there were no scratch marks.

Good luck with this project. I look forward to the updates. Makes me wish my car was mint green.

Wow, I had no idea you were going to tackle the entire paint job yourself. That’s a major task in itself. I can’t wait to see the results after you have finished wet sanding and polishing.

Out of curiosity how many coats of base and clear did you use? Did you wet sand between any of the coats?

😁 I think I had it in mind to do it all myself when I started . As I progressed It became a full blown desire to do so. Now it has turned to an obsession😁

The primer was wet sanded with 600 grit prior to the color being applied. The paint system I am using (Cromax by Axalta) requires the color to not be sanded, and it needs to be clear coat within 24 hours. The clearcoat has also been wet sanded with 600 grit and will get another coat. As for the color it was 3 coats before clear coat

Painting in your garage by yourself is a boat load of work. I haven't done it that way since HS many eons ago. Although I used Imron which I later learned was not a healthy product.

There is something to be said for doing it all yourself. A true labor of love.

How many coats of clear? 3?

yes 3 coats of clear will use 1500 to 2000 grit to final wet sand the clear before buffing

I decided to break down this project into steps I got the doors clear coated and am mostly done with the passenger door and will do drivers door tomorrow. Once the doors are done will wrap in plastic and hang on the wall till assembly time The front fenders will be next. Then the chassis

That's a great idea. I do that with a lot of my projects. Break them into pieces and do the smaller quicker ones first. It gives me the feeling like I am really making progress. Good luck, it looks great so far.

When I first shot the color and the clear I think it got too cold in the garage. The color went in fine the clear not so good it kind of discouraged me so I stopped for a while. Finally decided to break it up to see if I could correct the issues before tackling the chassis again. I did a lot of research and detirmined the temp got to low and I had my gun set up wrong. So I am back at it. I got my windscreen seals for Christmas from my beautiful wife genuine Porsche seals 😁😎

You’re giving me motivation to get mine done, John. :) The joys of non-metallic - you can go panel to panel.

Any idea on the the size/offsets of your Cup 2 reps? Just got a set Wednesday.

Oh the joys of non metallic and clear coat base coat

I have a genuine set in my shed 7x17 and 17 x9 both 55mm offset the ones on the car are 7.5x17 and 9x17
I think the fronts are 47mm and the rears 52mm but I could have that backwards😁 they were on the car when it got here in the Black Hills from Honolulu and it has been awhile since I really paid them any attention

😁 good to hear from you again Steve my goal in the next couple of weeks is to get the interior back in drivers side door and windows the install the front and rear windshields. Also need to reinstall everthing in the frunk. I need to be able to start Talia up so I can move her out of the garage so I can paint the deck lids and bumper covers and mirror components. 😎👍

No still working on it between real job , wife jobs 😏 and grandkids and dogs I only get at most a few hours a week to get after it. I will today finish installing the hvac suitcase, fire wall or bulkhead (have seen it called both) and if all goes smoothly the fuel tank.
Thank you for checking in
John

bweSteve 04-08-2018 01:25 PM

weather should start warming up soon too John. Hoping that helps all of us with our to-do lists (at least those of us with cold garage floors :crying: )
Thanks for continuing to post on your progress here. We're out here, watching, listening, and clearly a LOT of RL Community cheering you on.

Hey, at first when I looked at the shelf in your garage, I thought maybe that was a picture of you & Matt,... but then noticed it was a calendar. You should have your wife take some time to print out some nice pictures & laminate (so your grubby hands don't ruin them, hehe), and hang them around the garage as inspiration. I just recently did that (cuz I'm older now too), plus created a collage of simple 4x6 printouts too. I just took some laminate sheets 8x11, peel them off, sticky side up, then just lay all your pics down to stick them permanently & WhaaLa, done. Easy peazy. Anyway, just a thought. Pics help me stay motivated, remind me of the good times & the reasons why I love this hobby. Just a thought. Put the wife to work too. ;-)

Take care & keep plugging away John. We all know the challenges of finding an hour here, and hour there to work in the garage.

JohnK964 04-08-2018 02:11 PM

Steve my friend good to hear from you
I just came in from working on Talia I got the hvac and bulkhead in. Decided to get done breakfast. We still have snow on the ground here with more to come. We can massive blizzards here clear into May. About 10 years ago we got 3 blizzards the first 3 weeks in May 😁. I think I will go out the fuel tank in in a bit. My only concern there is the check valve for the hvac is awol but I do believe I can get it in from beneath so I probably will drop the tank in 👍

I also am having a bit of trouble getting the left front fender lining up correctly started getting frustrated with it so I move to the hvac plenty to do in the frunk do no big deal.
Great to hear from you Steve
John

Agree I got the suitcase in then found a rubber spacer in the hole by the fuel pump that guess what goes on the bottom of the suit case so had to take it back out, then put the bulkhead in guess what fuel tank wouldnt go in 😫 oh well I guess it was good practice 😂

John McM 04-08-2018 04:33 PM

My car is RHD. The tank goes in with everything else already installed but it's a tight fit. What is a pain is that the sender is on the side under the expansion tank on a RHD car so you have to undo that to get to the sender to siphon the tank. If I do this again I will try to run the car until well on reserve and then idle it until it stops.

John McM 04-08-2018 04:35 PM

I couldn't work out the banjo connection on the fuel tank either so never replaced the seals. I'm running the car with no cover for a bit just to make sure I don't get leaks.

Deserion 04-09-2018 10:39 AM

I've had to remove the bulkhead about 2 or 3 times so far, and will have to pull it yet again to replace the left side evaporator fan cage. :( Apparently my repair decided to let go again.

Glad to see the progress, John. Keep going!

bweSteve 05-10-2018 03:06 PM

Hey John, have you seen the Instagram story (called an "InstaStory" - series of short video clips strung together. My kids got me into it),... from the IG "porscheartdaily" ??

Just today they have uploaded a bunch of short video's from a track day event (overseas somewhere), and there's a beautiful Mint Green 964 (with cage, & looks like a RS).
The 5th segment shows a walkby as the guy is in the staging lanes,... and then the last segment shows it rounding a corner at the track. nice sound too.
cool.
I can't tell which track it is. Maybe someone here knows.

How ya doin' these warmer days?

An update

Sorry guys I got into a mental funk this spring😢 Id go try and work on Talia and at times just stand there not knowing what to do it also seemed when I did do something Id have to do it again or even 3 😫times.
After Memorial Day I felt my funk lifting and realizing why also that this whole slow process was the purpose of my trip not finishing the car. So I got slowly got back on my journey. The last couple of weeks made some small steps on my journey. I still havent painted the hood, engine deck lid, bumper covers and other small pieces but will this summer. I did install the ecu, trans controller, cruise and alarm controllers, fuel pump. I also fixed one of the hvac servos. I could start Talia all Id have to do is add oil and fuel but decide to tackle valve adj first also to try and track down an oil leak she has.

JohnK964 06-10-2018 01:46 PM

I forgot to mention I reinstalled Taliss sunroof too

Greg Wolfe 06-10-2018 05:40 PM

This is absolutely fantastic! Love the color.

Mr. Wolfe

bweSteve 06-11-2018 12:37 AM

hmmm, I know that feeling John. Been there before. My wife kids me a lot, since I am always so much about the "fun in the journey", and she is more of a destination girl.

I sometimes keep projects around (usually much to her chagrin) so that I always have something to work on in the garage.

Motivation is a strange thing. It ebbs & flows in mysterious ways. And when that project is a large one, like Talia,... is nearing completion... well there may just be a fear in that. Great part is YOU can define when it ends. Will it ever really be over? Probably not for a long time.

From my outside looking in, the one thing I'd say is that once Talia is indeed ready for cruising, C&C, etc,... it will be the story that gives you satisfaction,... and I foresee a lot of people wanting hear that story. a MINT story. A story of a son & a Dad, and a journey that latest longer than anyone else could have realized, including yourself.

Stay the course John. The journey will be a LOT longer than just the rebuild. You've got a long way to go till the story is completely told.
=Steve

rkwfxd 06-13-2018 01:09 PM

FWIW,

Years ago I had a friend who owned a business (custom furniture and decor) and was building a plane in his garage. I asked him how he did it. He said he went to work every day at 08:00 and came home every night at 5:00. He had dinner with his wife and kids and stayed in the house until 7:00. At 7:00, whether he wanted to or not, he went out to the garage and committed to working for 30 minutes on his plane. If, after 30 minutes, he no longer wanted to work on it, he would stop and go back inside.

He never stopped.

He said that no matter how tired he was or uninterested or unmotivated on any one day, by the time he had worked on it for 30 minutes his enthusiasm was back and he usually worked on it until about 11:00 each night at which time he forced himself to go to bed so that he could get up and go to work the next day.

John, I can't but help respond why I check your thread frequently. Every time I see the progress you are making, you are uncovering what many of us are like on the inside. It is great to see a car that is more than it appears to be. More emotional attachments than meet the eye. And a future with promise. Thanks for posting and keeping us informed. I like mint green more everyday!

I did discover the center of the rear bumper cover isnt original to Talia no traces of Mint Gruen paint 😥
I am sure the front bumper cover is a replacement also

Deserion 07-02-2018 10:09 AM

I suppose that's bound to happen due to inattentive drivers. :\ My decklid (!) isn't original, for what it's worth. Not sure about the bumper covers though.

I only only had a bit of clear left the mint green needs to be clear coated within 24 hours so I did what you see. You may wonder why not the other shark fin. Well that would involve me admitting while admiring the drivers side noticed my rather large rubber gloves thumb on it. I aint doing that to embarrassing.

I sent my 964 out for stripping and repainting about 4 mos ago after the disasters job that was done to it before. It has been painted and cleared and getting put back together. Hope to get it back by the end of the month.

Good deal on your car Mark I know the quality you were striving for is very high. Talia is never going to be a show car and I plan on driving the pistol out of her so my home paint job is cool with me. Im very happy to hear from you and thank you so much for following along

Here in the UK that hood would be called a ‘rat’ look which seems to be a trend at the moment (don’t ask me why???). So you could leave it as is, and some folk would think it cool lol!!!

On a more serious note, I think your doing a great job, and the car will be a credit to you. Well done!

Btw, what brand of clear are you using, and what spray gun. I’m asking because the finish looks pro.

Raven 666 09-18-2018 06:02 AM

We also have this crazy sub culture going on over here in Australia were you have to make your early Air cooled 911 look like a beat up junker with different colored panels , rust , exposed auto filler and loads of patina, riding on skinny steel wheels with crappy old tires ,and dropped to the deck ...................I just dont get it :banghead:

I've seen that, you can even get rust you paint on apparently! I'm into guitars, manufacturer's are selling "road worn" guitars for an extra cost. When you could just buy one and beat it up! I think it's stupid. As far as johns frunk lid goes it's totally up to him. Maybe hang it on the wall and paint up a nice one?

I am using Axalta Cromax paint system. As for the gun a cheap one I had painted my own motorcycle several times over 30 plus years so decided shoot I can do this Ive got better with each panel 😁😎

On a more serious note, I think your doing a great job, and the car will be a credit to you. Well done!

Btw, what brand of clear are you using, and what spray gun. Im asking because the finish looks pro.

My wife is getting a bit tired of 964 parts hanging around 😂. The first thing she said when I started this was and I quote You just ruined that car :roflmao:

JG 996T 09-18-2018 09:44 AM

Clear over the patina. You can always paint it later.

JohnK964 09-18-2018 02:54 PM

Convinced

Yea Im convinced I need a better sarcasm emoge imoge what ever it called. There is no way Id leave Talias hood that way after all the work I have put in it. The responses did make me laugh though.
Thanks for following along guys 😎

JohnK964 09-22-2018 10:54 PM

Unbelievable

I was painting the Mint Gruen on Talias front bumper cover today color went on great 1st and 2nd coat of clear went on perfect. Here is where it got ugly.
I went into the house to chill for 20 or so minutes and apparently when I went back to the garage about a thousand lil knats flew in. Im about half way done with the third coat I see a knat land in the clear then the lil father less kamikazed in support of the first one in the next few minutes it looked like someone shook pepper on my nice clear coat 😫😫

Well now I got to wet sand the lil a holes out of my clear coat 😢😢

Marine Blue 09-22-2018 11:29 PM

Bummer on the knats, but now you have a cool story to tell people about the joys of painting a car in your own garage.

How close are you to completing her?

headlight trim rings, fuel door, top sides of hood and engine deck lid. I dont think the knats are a cool story at all😂:roflmao:

Marine Blue 09-22-2018 11:50 PM

Did you already install all the windows/seals etc? Do you also plan to source new stickers to install throughout the body to match what came from the factory?

yes on the stickers I took pictures of what was there before sanding.
I havent installed the windows yet as I have been considering pulling the seals between the front fenders and temporarily mounting bumper covers with no seals and shooting one last coat of clear over entire car. If I do Ill haul her to my son in laws place he set up a temporary paint booth and has a high quality Sikens paint gun with a large compressor.

The knat thing really could have been catastrophic if they had moved in when the color was tacky before I had cleared it. In reality it wont take a lot of wet sanding to debug her.

I cant get the last push pin to engage the one right in front of the shark fin. 😢 Any ideas guys?

Dingo 01-01-2019 06:18 PM

I had the same problem on the one near the front wheel, no matter what i couldn't get it to click in . I took it off the part and it clicked in fine. Interested to hear why.

JohnK964 01-01-2019 06:23 PM

Did you try a different pin or grommet ? Its almost like it wont push in far enough. Another thing the one speed nut on the shark fin near the oil thermostat still thinkingnon that one

Yes I purchased all new pins and those red things that go into the body, I'm pretty sure you are right, the shape of my side will must be slightly different to my body and won't go in far enough.

My shark tins are for some reason aftermarket fiberglass so cant relate on that one.

JohnK964 01-01-2019 06:38 PM

All new pins and grommets oh well we had a blizzard here and seeing how we get snow here till May even June no hurry 😎

IIRC I put the plastic nut between my forefinger and next finger, place it on the bolt end and give it a slight turn. Once the nut is on the bolt I use a ratchet spanner, similar to this. It is possible.

Thanks John (great name) If I can get my fingers in there Ill give it a go. Here in a couple of weeks I have been planning on raising Talia up on jack stands to do a valve adj so Ill get in there and give it a go. I have a flex shaft tool I can put a 1/4 drive socket on also I maybe able to use it

I got my last push pin to click in I kind of cheated I put the push pin in the grommet then got the tabs on the cover lined up with the slots in the push pin and got it to click in👍

^^ Thank You Mr Blue I discovered it hard as hell to buff bumper cover pieces by them selves so Im in the process of mounting the rear bumper cover. Once that is done Ill rotate Talia 180 degrees and start on the drivers side.

Marine Blue 03-09-2019 01:00 PM

No doubt polishing requires a decent amount of pressure and if you don’t have the pieces perfectly stabilized they will vibrate and move which could damage the paint. I usually tape off all the rubber seals to keep the polish away and prevent damage to them during the polishing with good results.

Ouch, it sounds like youve had a rough couple of months. Hopefully the weather improves and your can get your place dried out quickly. More importantly hopefully you can get back to working on Talia.

By the way, the wrist thing must be going around. I broke my right wrist a few weeks ago and havent been able to drive the manuals.

Looking forward to the next installment.

Wow,... hey John,... I must admit, somehow my lack of postings caused RL to not pull this thread up on my recent viewings, so I am just now hearing of the injuries & flooding. Ouch. It'll improve on both fronts for sure,... and this is a journey anyway for sure.

Thank goodness it was the basement instead of the garage tho!!

Good progress on Talia!!

I have the hood to go plus above mentioned fuel door, headlight trim rings plus a shark fin that got thumbed by me while wet. As previously mentioned the underside of the hood is already done

Jacke2c 07-08-2019 07:56 AM

John thanks for the update. It is probably closer than you think. It always seems farther away the closer you get.... Details details. huh? The pieces you are showing are looking good. :)

JohnK964 07-08-2019 08:30 AM

I should have added since the last update I decided I didnt like how the left front fender was fitted. So I pulled it off Friday discovered when I replaced part of the rusted away part it was a bit to wide and didnt allow the fender by the door to drop down all the way. What a pain🤣 if not for that everything would have been painted.

I can certainly understand why a person would be tempted to try and reuse it. It truly is a pain in the arse to get the wires in the proper groove 🤨 now Im really trying to understand adding the glue in the seal groove that the glass sits in 😖

Rear window install

Well been a while since Ive posted. I had been struggling with the rear quarter window trim piece. I finally got them to stay in but then had trouble getting the windows in correctly too far forward thanks to some great Rennlist members and their good hints got them in this am where Im happy. After getting my rear window out of storage I discovered the tabs for the defrost grid off. I tried the repair with the fancy defrost grid glue but still didnt have continuity in the grid. As I only drive Talia in the summer I decided to not replace the window and just reinstall it as is. I did run the wires for the high taillight thru the seal and install the rear window myself this morning also though I hadnt planned on it 😳. Im sure I can get it back out with some help if needed

Talia is coming along nicely. It is a long road but the finish work albeit time consuming is the most gratifying.

Those tabs are so fragile. Any tug on the harness or even removing it can do quick damage. I recall learning that the hard way on my SC. IIRC I soldered it and was able to make a connection although it took many tries and I think that was a fluke.

I am curious John. Are you going to do a final "finishing" polish on it when you are done with assembly, or do you have other plans? It is hard to tell from the pictures of how fine the finish is currently. I am just curios. I plan to do my car myself in about 18 months after I retire and just wanted to know your thoughts on a massive DIY project.

I still have a lot of buffing to do some parts like bumper covers are dam hard to hold unless mounted also I have limited storage room

JohnK964 10-22-2019 10:06 AM

I also discovered the older paint or the parts I painted first buff better. Its a huge undertaking frustrating but oh so rewarding to do every bit by myself 😎👍

JohnK964 10-22-2019 10:26 AM

😳😳

Jacke2c 10-23-2019 11:45 AM

John, you may be on to something. I remember there was a paint guy that I talked to when i painted my first car with Imron about 30 years ago. He also suggested waiting 2-3 months to allow the paint to come to a full hardness before doing a final polish. He was right as i suspect you are discovering. I think paint reaches its "cured state" lets say 97-98% in a matter of a few days, but takes some time (depending on the hardening additives that have to cook off during the drying process) to reach 100%. I talked to one shop and noticed that they had several cars that came out of the paint and cure booths (used specialized lights) and they were setting in the sun. He said some time in the sun (a couple of days) does wonders for getting the finish to gas-off and fully harden.

John, you may be on to something. I remember there was a paint guy that I talked to when i painted my first car with Imron about 30 years ago. He also suggested waiting 2-3 months to allow the paint to come to a full hardness before doing a final polish. He was right as i suspect you are discovering. You did the Imron route as well. I painted my first 911 back in the late 70's using Imron. Nasty stuff but makes for a rock hard finish once cured. Fresh paint is soft and takes a special skill to polish. I was never one for touching fresh paint only a few weeks old and prefer to wait if I can but a pro can do wonders with the right process. I just had this bumper painted for a friend and it came out perfect although I had to be very careful installing it as it can easily be marred.

When I painted cars with oil based paint, I have zero experience with Imron and today's water based paints, we would advise the customer to wait around three to four weeks before having their detail guy do his work on it.

JOhn, I am so happy for you! Great accomplishment in what must seem like forever. Too bad you didn't have a camera on your face.... the smile would be incredible........ but you would probably be embarrassed for the tears of joy!

Fantastic!!!! Many safe and healthy miles ahead. Don't make her too perfect otherwise any little chip or mark will drive you crazy. Get out and enjoy the ride not like we have much else to do these days.

Took a drive on Iron Mt Rd between Keystone,SD and Custer State Park here in the Black Hills. Its a fantastic road there are pigtail bridges and tunnels one that perfectly framed MT Rushmore in the tunnel opening

Vegas993 06-10-2020 10:45 AM
