Default H&R front strut hitting hood!?

My recently installed H&R coilovers are causing me problems.

Firstly, my car is an early '90 spec and the coilovers are late spec so I need late top mounts with adapters.

Secondly, I've found that the tops of the struts poke up quite high and when I turn the car, the strut hits the bonnet/hood. In a straight line the struts clear the inside of the hood frame but when I turn the wheel to full lock, the movement in the top mounts lets the strut move over enough to hit the hood frame, I don't know what's going on?

I have got the washer spacer thing mounted between the top spring cup and top mount, this is about 10mm thick.

Am I missing something or have I done the top mount nuts up too tight and they're crushing the bearing which results in the top mount moving and twisting when I turn?

Helpppppp
