JAY H Thank you for that link, I had not seen those cars for sale till now. They all seem really nice, low milage cars, unofrtunelty (even thought the price might be fair) it's still out of my league. I don't want to finance anything more then $5,000 on top of the $20,000 that I have in cash. So my max at a dealer would be like $22,000 before registration and taxes.
(california sales taxes for cars have trippled )
This is why I am looking for a private seller, so the taxes that we claim on the sale are lower (hence, better price and lower taxes = Most bang for the buck) My buck!

I don't think one can find a 964 for $22k, unless it's in below average condition and has high mileage. Most of the nice 964s i have recently seen are in the $28k to $35k range.

There is over 10 of them in southern california alone well taken care of with 100K or less for under 25K so it is definelty possible.
I think the 28K to 35K are with very low milage or close to new condition
I just test droove a 84,000 mile 1991 C2 with mind interior and exterior, new LUK clutch and new topend job for 18,900
So I know they are out there

when you see the vehicle in person, aside from all the other mentioned suggestions, make sure to check for rust, espcially in and around the engine compartment, in the wheel wells, and any other place water may normally get to (like in the front trunk area).

PPI over gasket and service history?
I test drove a 1990 baltic blue C4 the other day and liked it so much I scheduled a PPI for Monday. The car is a 5sp with 115000 miles for around 15k, but has an incomplete service history and being a '90 lacks the gasket of the later models. Now in doing my reseach of back buyers guides some people say to stay away from both no gasket 964s and cars with incomplete records.
However the car looks great, felt great, and just fit like broken in baseball glove. So nice! One owner for the first 10 years. One owner for the last 5 and half years and garaged that whole time, but the four years in between there seem to have been a few sales including one EBay transaction. Would a solid PPI trump your reservations about the gasket and the incomplete service history?
Thanks in advance!

ps. FWIW this would be my primary vehicle in winter and then a subdued and classy alternative to the spyder in summer. Could handle having it in for a month or two every other summer to get some preventative maintainence done.

Wow, this is an old thread back from the dead.
Since a '90 is now a 20 year old car, a solid PPI would trump any missing history in my book. Condition is everything at this point in the game.
115,000 miles is only about 5750 a year. Not bad...

I think at this point and mileage, if that motor isn't spewing oil from the cylinder to head area, it's one of the solid cars that probably won't ever leak. I wouldn't worry about that aspect of the car.
I'm not sure where you are located and what kind of conditions that you wish to drive this 20 year old 911 in, but preventative maintenance is key to keeping these cars reliable in harsh conditions... That said, a 964 C4 would be a heck of a snow car with that overbuilt AWD system.
A 964 vs. current Spyder comparo would be pretty interesting too...!

#1 Continually ask yourself not to trust any answers to your questions that a seller may give you! (Unless you know them personally, of course.)
I've had a seller lie to me about an issue with a vehicle (Jeep CJ7), then repeat the lie after I paid him and pleaded with him to tell me the real situation regarding a steel pin that a third party claimed he had dropped down into the transmission. Luckily I took my own advice and opened up the trans and removed the pin (that be swore wasn't in there) before I started it up. Good thing, otherwise the pin would havel destroyed the trans.
P-car owners are typically a little classier, I know, but the misrepresentations, when they do occur, will probably just be a little smaller.
