Good topic.

1. Why are you selling?
2. How long have you had it?
3. When and where was it last serviced?
4. Have you got ALL the receipts etc for ANY work done?
5. What kind of use did the car get? (city driving, track, highway...)
6. Has it ever been in a crash?
7. What's the chassis number?
8. Has it had any major work done (engine rebuild, clutch, gearbox, brakes)?
9. Has it been modified in any way, and if so by who and when?
10. Are you ready to haggle?

Whay not ask all the standard questions from non-Porsche people:

X) How fast does it go?

XX) How many times have you been caught speeding?

XXL)what is the best thing you've done in it?

XXXL) I bet it drinks petrol.....?

XXXXL) ...yea, but can you park it anywhere without worrying...?

XXXXXL)...where do you put the kids...Golf bag...old bag....whatever...?

This is usually followed by " I'd get one but my wife would be afraid of it"

PPI=Pre-Purchase Inspection, Should be done if your're truely interested in a particular car prior to any $ agreements, as it could turn up some big problem or conversly get a clean bill of health. Usually they run around $150, have it done at a shop of YOUR choice, not the sellers.

A PPI is a Pre Purchase Inspection. Absolutely essential unless you really really really know what you're doing.

Something I haven't seen in this thread yet:
Question 19: Have the brakes been refurbished? And if not, can you swap the brake pads easily? Refurbishing the brakes isn't cheap.

Cheers,

JW

PPI = Pre-purchase Inspection, implies by a knowledgeable Porsche mechanic. It should cover just about everything and include leakdown and compression tests. Recent estimates on here indicate it's about $250.

Good hunting! J

On John Miles site there is a link (in the reviews section I think) to a 911&PW article (by Phil Raby if I remember correctly) that goes into much depth about this subject. I'd check it out if I were you!

Actually, I was thinking of questions you might ask yourself:

1. What are you planning to use the car for? Daily driver? Track/autocross? Weekend warrior?
2. Do you want rear wheel drive or all wheel drive? Or are you open to either?
3. Coupe, cab, or targa?
4. Tip or manual?
5. Any exterior color you absolutely HAVE to have? Any color you wouldn't take, even if they practically gave you the car?
6. What about interior colors?
7. Any options you're hoping to have? Limited slip?
8. How do you feel about modifications? Does the car have to be bone stock?
9. Have you found a local mechanic that knows Porsches (especially the 964 vintage?)
10. Have you looked into insurance? (This can be a rude awakening for some.)
11. How much money do plan to set aside for the inevitable first year (or so) sorting out?

Good points!

1. What are you planning to use the car for? Daily driver? Track/autocross? Weekend warrior?
DAILY DRIVER
2. Do you want rear wheel drive or all wheel drive? Or are you open to either?
OPEN TO EITHER
3. Coupe, cab, or targa?
PREFER CAB, COUPE SECOND BUT WILL CONCIDER TARGA
4. Tip or manual?
DEFINETLY MANUAL (CONCIDER TRIP IF 5K CHEAPER ONLY
5. Any exterior color you absolutely HAVE to have? Any color you wouldn't take, even if they practically gave you the car?
PREFER DARK BLUE WITH WHITE INTERIOR BUT I WILL TAKE ANY OTHER COLOR, MECHANICAL CONDITION IS MOST IMPORTANT
6. What about interior colors?
ANYTHING BUT BEIGH OR BROWN
7. Any options you're hoping to have? Limited slip?
WOULD LIKE TO GET WITH CUP WHEELS AND TURBO MIRRORS, MAYBE LIMITED SLIP IF POSSIBLE
8. How do you feel about modifications? Does the car have to be bone stock?
THE LESS THE BETTER (IN MY BOOK) UNLESS IT WAS FACTORY OPTIONS FROM DAY 1 (LIKE CUP WHEELS)

9. Have you found a local mechanic that knows Porsches (especially the 964 vintage?)
YES, MORE THEN ENOUGH IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
10. Have you looked into insurance? (This can be a rude awakening for some.)
UH NO, BUT AM 30 MARRIED, GOOD NEIGHBOORHOOD AND HAVE 1 TICKET/WIFE HAS ZERO
11. How much money do plan to set aside for the inevitable first year (or so) sorting out?
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? I THOUGHT THESE WERE GERMAN ENGINEERED
JUST KIDDING, I AM HOPING FOR LESS THEN 2K PER YEAR.

Attached is a picture of the color preference

How difficult is it to change the distributor belt? Just remove one of the distributors (and put it back in the same way!)? They are only about $8 at Pelican.
They started putting in a head gasket in middle of 1991 MY, I think. Does any one know the engine number when this started? I saw it in Excellence a long time ago ...

I don't see the question of the distributor belt above (the vent kit is mentioned) My understanding was that changing the dist belt was superhard and most DIY'ers took out the dist and sent it to get a new belt put in by a pro!

BigRubberJeep:

How far away are you willing to look for a car? Looks like the pic you posted of your prefered color is a Baltic Blue 911. There is one Baltic Blue coupe for sale in my area.

Link to '90 C2

Classic Auto Sales has a Baltic Blue '90 Cab for sale, though it's been there awhile.

Both of these cars above seem to be priced high...

Good luck in your search,
Jay

Anywhere there is a rubber seal look for rust (windows, door, windshield, ESPECIALLY the front trunk.) Ask if they have had any seals replaced. If there is rubber attached to a metal surface chances are it is held in place with an adhesive. The big unnoticed problem starts when the seal is removed incorrectly (i.e. 95% of Porsche dealers and independents) and they accidentally pull up the adhesive with the paint and primer/etc. protection underneath still attached to the the rubber and don't put anything down to protect the now bare metal surface. 3 years later and the pin ***** sized spot has now grown to several inches in size (and has become outrageously expensive to fix properly, i.e. >$1000.)
