What's with 964 JRZ rear shocks?

Have you guys noticed this:

It seems like most other rear shock options look like this:

Anyone know the reasoning behind the JRZ setup? any upsides/downsides to this design?

Less unsprung mass; similar to inverted motorcycle forks.
