Dimmer rheostat / gauge lights fix
Symptom: The dimmer **** has no effect on the gauge light illumination.
This was the only electrical gremlin in the car and has annoyed me for years. I finally tracked it down to a resistor that had come out of its solder joint inside the "Instrument Light Control Unit", aka "Luminous Intensity Control", aka 964.618.103.00, aka a dumb relay with a bad solder joint. Easy fix to re-solder the resistor.
Finding it was the first trick. Note that it's located in the fusebox with the other relays on 993s. For 964, it is behind the fuel/oil level gauge. It's in the socket very tight. I used a stubby screwdriver to prise it out. *Edit* I almost forgot- probably better to pull out the oil temp/pressure gauge and give yourself a larger opening to stick your hand through. The fuel gauge opening isn't bad, but I did remove some skin in the process.
With it removed, you'll have no gauge illumination. I believe that the RS does not have dimmer control. I don't know if a simple bridge relay is used in place of this "control unit", or if the dimmer **** connector is bridged.
