Diagnostic Software

Does anyone have a diagnostic software and pc cable I can borrow/rent for a day? My UDT999 is showing an abnormal knock count........ 5000 for every 10,000 ignitions and my mechanic hooked up his Durametric diagnostic software and didn't register any knocks at all. I just want to troubleshoot my kit to see if it might be my cable or a glitch in my software.

I'll obviously pay shipping in both directions.

Thanks guys!

FYI, The scantool software doesn't have the knock counter feature. If you can get your hands on an oscilloscope or 12vdc tolerant logic analyzer and read the pulses off pin 19 of the diagnostic plug while the car is running - should be flat line. Read off of pin 14 and see the tach pulses. I see your post about your knock problem, good news on not being the engine - bad news is there seems to be noise crossing over to pin 19?

DIAG Socket pin..........function...........................DME pin
7................................L....................................13
8................................K....................................55
14..............................TACHO O/P......................6
19..............................KNOCK O/P.......................21
15..............................CHECK ENGINE CONTROL...22
12..............................+12 VOLTS.......................--
10..............................GND.................................--

Disconnect the knock sensor while running your UDT and see if you still have knocks

refer to this post for location of connection for left (bank 1) sensor>>

Right (bank 2) is another green connector centerline of engine above alternator IIRC

Great, info. Thanks for posting. Will give these a shot to see if I can isolate the problem. I was hoping it would be as simple as my adapter plug being worn out, but we will see. Thanks again!

yeah the rennlist freeware tool doesn't show knocks.

Besides the hammer, are UDT/PDT and Durametric the only ones that do show knocks?

Does anyone know if this is a limitation of the SW or with the HW (cable/interface)?

JasonAndreas 04-28-2016 11:50 AM

The problem is hardware so I am surprised Durametric actually counts knock pulses?

A quick look at the Durametric user guide doesn't bring up anything about it able to count knocks.

For the Hammer, it's not like it accesses the ecu and pulls a number from a certain register in memory that contains the number of knocks. The hammer actually counts 10K pulses from the tach (pin 14) and within that window, it senses and counts pulses from the knock circuit (pin 19).

I thought that the knock count line out just gives a quick +5V when knock occurs? Pretty easy to build a simple circuit to lengthen the signal and connect it to an led for a visual warning.
