Thumbs up 8" cups and 255?

Hi all,

My 964C2 came with aftermarket 17" Mille Miglia Cup wheels but curiously, they are 7.5" in the front and 8" in the rear with wrongly-sized tires. So I want to put 255/40 in the rear as per normal spec and I wasn't sure if 255s were a bit too wide for 8" rears. They are 235/45 currently for some reason.

Are the OEM Cups 8" in the rear? And they came with 255/40s? Can anyone help.

Oh and.. YES I searched. But most have 9" Cups in the rear, which isn't an issue at all with 255s.

Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help before I order the tires.

245 on 8" is OK. 255 is too wide, IMO, for 8s.

Thanks RallyeChris I think I will have to put my rears up for sale for someone who may want to put them in the front on a Turbo or wide body, then search for proper 9" rears.

I currently have 235/45/17s in the rear that came with the car and I would like to go wider to the recommended size.

I've got CCW Race Classics 8" front and 9" rear. 225 front, 255 rear. I find it to be perfect for the NB.

Look at the spec for the tire that your buying. It will give a wheel width range. An 8" rim is likely too narrow for 255s but the spec will confirm.

Are you sure that the rears are 8? I have the Millie Miglia wheels and they are 7.5 front 205/50 and 9 rears with 255/40 tires.
The et is stamped on the wheel.

The tire manufacturers have a recommended wheel width range for each of their products

for 255/40 x17 all the recommended ranges I've seen are 8.5" to 10"

the wider wheel gives best performance the narrowest best ride

@Derek911: Yup they are and the ET stamping confirms. I have no idea why the previous owner(s) have done such a think. (7.5f, 8r) Maybe this was the previous owners winter setup, then eventually put summer tires on it before the sale? Not sure.. I bought the car who didn't keep it too long so the setup is from the owner even before him.

Are the Mille Miglias still produced or is this an ebay/forums classifieds job? I will start shopping for the 9" right away.

@RallyeChris: I love the CCWs as well by the way and will have a set eventually. I would love a set in all black on my white 964, I think that setup looks awesome. But I still want the Cups first and keep them as a daily set.

You shouldn't have a problem finding 2 either new or used. The specs are 9J x 17 et 47 and tire size is 255/40. Great looking wheel for the price.

I'd like to find a pair of 9s for the rear and move my 8s to the front. If you know of any for sale I'm interested!

The OEM 17" Cup wheels for 964 were 17x7 with 205/50-17 front tires and 17x8 with 255/40/17 rear tires. The 255 are just fine on 8" rear wheel.

Indeed. Factory RSA's had 8 inch rears with 255. That being said, I also agree with the rest of the overall sentiment that for hard driving- a 255 isn't well supported on a 8 inch wheel.... But it isn't exactly dangerous if Porsche supplied OE cars as such.

Fvd sells the wheels. They are a trusted vendor.
I also just found a few on eBay but the Et's are not right. You need 9j et 47.
The ones on eBay are et15.
