I've run Mobil One and Red Line 15w50. Good results on both. Very little oil consumption. Going to put Red Line 5w50 in this time since it has Porsche A40 approval and see how the car likes it.

I guess that with RedLine you will be more than fine, unfortunately I cannot get it easily in Europe. Not so sure about the Mobil 1 15w50 though...
By the way, do you know that what Porsche recommends for all "classics" up to the 993 included is 10w60?
http://www.porsche.com/international.../motoroil-faq/
But I supose your RedLine will be better than whatever manufaturer's oil they have put on those pretty Porsche cans

The oil issue arose in 2001 w/ the API SJ spec oil, they split the oils into 2 sub categories
Starburst label are reduced ZDDP and thinner, the target foir these oils is oe fill for reduced fuel consumption and reduced ZDDP for extended emissions control life
Donut label as was always used, the target here is older vehicles, oil packages were left up to the oil companies, in geberal the 50 wt oils kept the older ZDDP packages. There are exceptions so it's best to do your HW
here is the spec for the oil that was used as oe fill thru 1996 ie API SF, SG, SH
M1 API SH 15w-50 circa '93-96 1095ppm P, 1427ppm Zn(I don't have the specs for previous years but they would have been in line w/ the SH specs)
here is the current spec
M1 API SN/SM current 1200ppm P, 1300ppm Zn
current spec M1 15w-50 is adequate for use in older engines, M1 0w-040 is a Starburst oil and does not have the recommended ZDDP package, Porsche is not publishing the 10w-60 spec, if nothing else the weight would scare me off. oe wt spec was 15w-40 or 15w-50 or 20w-50 for nominal summer conditions.
Too much ZDDP is also bad, you want to keep the ZDDP level below 1600/17000

On castrol selector they suggest magnatec 5w40 for the 964, the one I bought
http://applications.castrol.com/oils...64-(1989-1993)
If you change the nation (i.e. Usa or Germany) the result is different.
Can I trust in Castrol suggestion or not?
The oil choice is a real pain in the ***.

Indeed, thats true.
I would not use ANY 5w-40 or 10w-40 in any air-cooled engines unless its in arctic conditions.
I'm unfamiliar with Castrol's ROW offerings, but I would choose a 15w-40, 15w-50 or 20w-50 oil containing 1200 ppm of ZDDP.

The shop that I use and has serviced my car even before I owned it puts in Kendall GT1 High Performance Liquid Titanium 20W50. It seems to meet the criteria outlined. Anyone have any positive or negative thoughts on this oil? I can buy it from the shop but it would be more convenient to buy it from a store. Anyone know what auto supply chain carries this grade?

There is so much information and conflicting opinions its a mine field!
I landed on Millers CFS 10w-50
http://www.millersoils.co.uk/automot...tor=Motorsport
The ZDDP is 1274.
For what its worth they seem to have a partnership with Tuthill Porsche whom rally air cooled 911's
Ultimately you pays your money you takes your chances!

4T is fine in the 10w-40 wt(ZDDP 1200/1300), I don't have specs for 15w-50

JagSType, do you have Harley Davidson stores in Spain? See if they sell the Mobil V-Twin 20W50 oil there.
