Default Groove worn into alternator shaft?

Hey Guys,

I did a belt change earlier this week and I noticed a groove in the alternator shaft where rear most shim is. Oddly it is not a even groove either, it is deeper on one side of the shaft than the other. Is this cause for concern or is this normal?

Thanks

Not normal, not sure if cause for concern.

I've seen posts where folks had their alternator shaft sheer and the whole fan assembly tore itself to bits, sent shrapnel through the hood, AC hoses, etc.

In those cases, it was never clear if it started with a broken shaft, or with a broken belt getting caught in the fan, or with a fan losing a blade.

+1 - Not normal. If it were me, I would change out the alternator just to be safe. The cost of alternators is not that high and the potential damage can be expensive if it damages the bodywork.

I wouldn't even drive it like that... Really not worth it. I had a cracked fan and thought it would be fine for another week. Not so, got lucky with little other damage.

Replace for sure.

Thanks for the comments. For some reason I forgot to take a picture. The grove itself is very small. Maybe only 1mm deep. Not sure if it has been there forever or if it is new.

Anyone have a good source for a replacement alternator if it comes to that?

Thanks
