Design 911 Rear indicator lens replacement tips?
I have purchased new rear indicator lens plastic from Design 911.
The theory is that you take the existing indicator lens off with a soldering iron or similar, attach the new one and then have what looks like a new indicator lens.
Has anyone here already done this? If so, any tips?

Sounds like you bought a lens from a pre-964 generation 911. It doesn't work that way on the 964. You either buy the whole unit, or if your current ones are in good shape you can paint them and then buff to rejuvenate them a little.

i thinks that the website says you can do this with 964 lights, but I wouldn't want to try it
Speaking of such, I wonder why nobody is producing repro 964 lights? For the amount of money these pull in and people are always wanting them, I thought some bright entrepreneur would have !

Indicator Lens for Rear light Unit. Porsche 964 (No. 96463190710/ 96463190810)
Code: 96463190
Indicator Lens for Rear light Unit.
Fits:
Porsche 964 1990-94
Porsche 964 Turbo
This is Indicator lens for your existing rear indicator unit. Normally the lens is not interchangeable but the clever guys in developments have come up with a solution.
Tip:
a customer has discovered an easy way to get the old glass off, if you put the Light into an ordinary oven at a 100 degrees for 7-8 minutes the glass will come loose or use heat from a soldering iron to un-weld the lens off the unit, and the same to weld the new lens on again, please make sure you have a perfect seal around the edge.

Let me just say that I have disassembled a center rear reflector for the purpose of modding it with led inlays. The lens was not easily removed, but doable. I might try this if I needed new lenses. Especially now that I know they can be baked for easier disassembly. Do they also sell the center section?

I have been wondering about this, and a friend that does some plastic work took a look at mine and suggested that for how much the replacement units cost, they are probably ALREADY being reproduced in China and sold as OEM.

I'm getting a respray so the cost is relatively low compared to the other work, and I don't want the lights to let the job down.

On the subject of the Porsche tax, I needed to replace the felt seal on the doors.
The first price I found was USD 96 each.
My body guy told me that they looked exactly like the ones on his VW Karrman Ghia (may need to be cut to length) which were USD 30 each so no guesses which ones I ordered

Package went through customs today so I should have them at home tomorrow, however am in Australia for two weeks so it may have to wait until then to see if the quality is OE. It would make sense that these are OE parts used in manufacture of full units.
