Default buy a rebuilt engine instead ?

hi fellas,

I'm about to fix my oil leak and drop the old engine out for parts refreshment. however due to the technical limitation in my country and time wise management. I heard that I can buy an already rebuilt engine from a reputable source and as soon as I received it I can return my old engine to them to have a little money back .

have anyone here tried this way before ? any company out there can be suggested ?

Cheers mate

I wouldn't do that. You wouldn't have a matching numbers 964 anymore.

Seen ebay ads in UK offering that service but none of them are known aircooled specialist, also as already mentioned you will loose on car's originality which may not be a big deal now but who knows in a few years time .....

Far better to send your original engine surely?

Whilst this sounds like a good idea. I wouldn't want to loose matching numbers.
Surely there must be a garage that specialises in engine rebuilds that given time could do a decent job?

If you want a low budget fix, then it's a good option.....just keep your case.

This sounds like a great option, especially if you're at a small shop or they don't do many rebuilds. I agree about keeping the matching numbers though...

Vertex definitely has the logistics covered. Maybe they would be receptive to picking up, rebuilding and returning the same engine. It would only add marginal cost to the process... if you have the time.

All of this is only important if people have had good experiences with Vertex rebuilt engines?

Are members actually suggesting a Vertex rebuild? Low bidder is low bidder for a reason.

If you are shipping your engine to the States send it to a proper air cooled specialists like Jae Lee at Mirage or Jeff Gamroth at Rothsport.

But rewinding to the beginning, why do theses oil leaks make you think you need a rebuild? Have you got leaking cylinders from bad gaskets or broken studs? Have you even properly tested it? You may just need to seal up the usual oil leaks and just drive your car for another 50k before you worry about it.

I personally enjoy how the engine pulls, i wanted to rebuild it is because i think i should do more with the engine if i am dropping it down for reseal. the oil is leaking from the middle of the engine mainly...

i've been told for 2 extreme options..
a) if I am happy with the engine, just keep driving it until problems happen
b) it's a waste of money to drop the engine to reseal and not to rebuild parts...

Looking for simple solutions:
It's common for the oil pressure sender gasket to leak and create quite a mess in that area.

old oil gasket

new, fat gasket

You seem pretty keen on rebuilding....so why not? The only thing I would consider is that you might as well upgrade it at the same time...come on...everyone's doing it! #ppressure

There are plenty of option out there. I am in same location as you are. The term "rebuilt" in our location is widely defined. Becareful.
