Cool History about my 964
Since I purchased my 964 last year I've wondered about the history before me. Unlike finding out history of a new girlfriend, this was a bit more fun. For 10 years the Red Queen sat in a garage in Littleton, CO being looked at, but rarely driven. I had paperwork for two other owners, but nothing to the first purchaser. Today I got a wild hair to dig a little further and was rewarded with some neat history.
My 964 carries the M code of 900, which is a tourist delivery. The Warranty voucher confirms this and the date of deliver was April 4, 1989. The first owner listed in the warranty book was a Mr Harper, from Knoxville. A 2nd owner was entered on 5/31/1989 at mileage 1290, so this Mr. Harper apparently had it for a short time. Seemed odd, an owner would likely lose money on an endeavor such as this. Did he yurn for the recently retired SC model? Was the C4 too civil for his taste? I wanted to find out, and did.
Turns out that the first owner was a Porsche Dealer here in the states. As part of the launch of the 964 in 1989 he was invited to Germany for several days as a business trip. He logged just shy of 1300 miles experiencing the 964 for the first time to the public driving around the countryside. Naturally he lamented not holding onto the car, but noted (like all of us) this was just one of many that got away. Unfortunately he had no photos to share from his trip, but he did mention the photo shoot while he was there.
I'm sure many of you are aware of that poster with all the red Carrera's in a circle that was part of many dealer pamphlets. Turns out my car was actually in this photo, was a part of Porsche history.
My 964 is here....somewhere.

I've wondered the same thing. I have the plate number it was assigned but the photo just isn't quite sharp enough. perhaps I'll find a poster size print.

Impressed. I started looking at my cars history and found it had been taken from the UK to Malaysia for short stint.
I can see some owners names but haven't been able to track them down.
Interesting indeed.

Very cool. Not to steal your thunder but just two weeks ago I purchased a 964 with also a rather interesting story. In November of 1991 Champion Porsche here in Florida raffled of a 1992 C2 as part of an Aids fundraiser. The winner and first owner flew in from Portland and the drove his new car back. He kept it until 2008 and clocked 111k miles. Second owner had it from then until 2 weeks ago and clocked an additional 15k miles. The insane thing about this car is not only do I have every single record and window sticker since it left Champion, I have the original raffle ticket, temp tag issued to him so he could drive it home, a picture of him getting the keys and letters relating to him winning the raffle. The car is right now in the process of being shipped to me. As soon as I get it I will post some pictures of this and my build. I got a set of e88 waiting to be installed!

The the OP: a good friend of mine also has a 89.5 Red C4 coupe that he bought from the local dealer principle after he returned from the 964 dealer launch meeting. That's the reason it seems almost all the 89.5 cars were red as each dealer got to drive their new red C4 at the meeting and then shipped it home to be the dealer demo. Cool story!
