I am currently pricing shops for a full repaint with window off for my 964. It is currently Midnight Blue metallic (still original paint), but as some of you may have red in past post am experiencing some clear coat peeling on the upper side of the driver door. The overall paint is actually very good though.

I love my car and not really planning to sell short term, but unexpected life event may change that. So what I am asking is if I have the car repainted in a different color will this really depreciate the value of the car? I really like Baltic blue or Horizon Blue, the midnight blue is fine but can look almost black at times. Anyway this is just a matter of preference/taste.

I just fear that going a different color than what the car came out of factory will cost me $$$ on depreciation,... is there any truth to that?

I know there are some car appeaser on this forum so please provide some meaningful insight.

I guess this question applies to any other major change such as suspension, wheels, engine mods, etc,...

Thank you
Horizon Blue is a beautiful color live...and should have never sold this HB 993TT....but I don't know if I would change the color because midnight blue is an awfully nice color as well.

I've seen car at the SEMA car show with concour finishes in the $10 grand range, I fully understand that you get what you paid for and the concept of "Porsche tax" but a paint job is a paint job regardless if its a Ford Escort or a Porsche.
Labor rates must be much cheaper in PA than MA. All I'm saying is it all adds up. Dropping the motor, doors, fenders hood decklid off, sunroof glass and dash out, interior stripped. Next thing you know it's 1500 on all new seals. Then your wiper blades and trim look like trash so those need to be refurbed. You're not gonna put the old pitted glass back in. Your faded tail lights will stand out like a sore thumb. And on and on and on...
If you get a full cornchange done properly for 10k or under its the steal of the century. I hope you do honestly.

Jim, my previous posted clearly states that I will be doing all the Diis/reassembly of parts including motor/trans. Lots of paint shop are happy that you will be taken on the removal and re-install of all parts this is tedious and not where they really make money. It also takes some liability off their hands.

All body seals were replaced when I did the wraps, and my rear center and side lights were replaced brand new last year. I spent $13K on the car when I purchased it and it was not just on pretty wheels and suspension, but on making sure all seals, bushing, and basically all old 25 years of faded parts were replaced.

I do believe my paint project will be well under $10K.

Mexico blue is such a stunning, happy color. It's just so right.

Thanks Jetta for posting, every time I look at this blue I just want to go for it,...

But I am looking at buying a nice set of Kerschner 3.6 Cup wheels, and going the conservative route and the horizon blue just really floats my boat.

I think I this point I'll just go for it. The worst that can happen, it if I really want to go back to its original color, in say 5-8 years or more, I'll just strip it down to bare metal and start from scratch with the Midnight Blue Metallic.

+1

The car below used to be a very nice track spec'd guards red car, but after a track incident - were all the corners were hit... it morphed into a really sweet looking RSR-type rep. When I read about people looking for original, never been re-painted (or touched up) cars, I think of this car.

I understand that sentiment, just the mention of it would scare most potential buyers away. That said, this is the usual reaction at cars and coffee...

wow that is awesome

PChar,
Just saw this car and thought of you. Is this close to the color you are interested-in?

Jetta, this is a bit too "Metallic", although it's a nice blue,... but not a big fan of slam down 964s.

I believe this was the 3.6 965 that was for sale a while back that used to be owned by the Sultan of Birhma or something. Now, that picture is exactly the reason whay I fell in love with horizon Blue. When I saw this car for sale, I was contemplating selling my house, my wife and my children to buy it.
