Default Can valves be really cleaned

It does appear that oil did dump in from the oil tank. I am guessing the level was higher due to condensation in the tank since I had not added oil.

Well the oil has appeared to have soaked the exhaust valves and now the are completely covered in gunk. Does anyone have a good idea on how to clean them without tearing down the engine.

Sorry for the bad pictures. iPhone does not seem to take good ones in dark, up close places.

Hmmm... Motorvac maybe? I've had excellent luck with that system in the past to cure pre-detonation issues due to deposits.

Those look OK,........I've seen far worse.

The only way to clean exhaust ports is by walnut shell blasting and that's not cheap to do.

Shamus,...Motorvac is only useful on intake ports & valves.

Believe it or not, its now the accepted and recommended procedure for all of the new DFI engines for removing the heavy carbon build up on the intake valves and ports that these are prone to having.

Thanks for all the input. Going to clean out exhaust system of oil and connect back and try running for awhile.

That's certainly a ton of fun, but will not affect the exhaust port deposits.

I wondered about that Steve and had hoped that the billows of black smoke that usually pour out during a session were these types of deposits being affected by the solution post-bang. Bummer

I can attest to the walnut shells approach, my tuned BMW 335i will be getting this treatment soon, and the turbo E90 crowd relies on it for the DFI motors.

Well did a leak down test and not good. Only cylinder 5 would hold any air at all. All the rest leaked pretty heavily right away through the exhaust valves. I guess I am heading down the rebuild route.

Duck, how many miles are on your engine? Just wondering I'm at 145,000 with no rebuild / top end yet.

120k on mine without ever being opened. Was hoping for a lot more miles. I have the rebuild dvd through Pelican and may tackle it myself (outsource all head work). Otherwise will take it down to the short block and take it to a good shop in Raleigh, NC.
