Porsche classic releases new classic car radio w/nav
Hot off the autoblog.com press, Porsche Classic has released a new radio more in line with the design for the 964/993. I loved the older design but I think this blends perfectly with the 964 switchgear.

Great news and awesome looking although the velcro'd USB dock is a bit cheesy given the expected price. We shall see if it becomes available in the US.

I can't hear my stereo in the car anyway... and my iPhone is a better navigator than most... so I don't see the need for this? Any idea of the retail price?
|
Pricing is north of $1300 USD.
I like that this option exists, but I personally wouldn't want it. Smartphones are among the best nav devices out there and I have one of those already. |
I've been waiting for them to release the new version. Nav or not, this is def the best look HU out there.
But prob not worth the cost when it comes to sound quality. |
What are the other 'oem look' stereo options on the market?
|
CDR-220 with a decent amp
|
I love this radio but my current one is barely on at all. It seems like they got the fit right with this revision as the previous one was poking out of the dash an inch or so.

I personally like the McIntosh HU's in my Porsche. :)

I have one of these. Looks right in the car without being too new looking...

I knew it was going to be expensive, but $1300?!
It looks fantastic, and I'm glad they made it, but gimme a friggen' break  |
Actually $1,300 is really not bad. How much does it cost to add Navigation to a normal car from the dealer? Or even to purchase an aftermarket unit like Pioneer or Alpine with Navigation? I bought that stupid Nav-TV unit for my 997C2S and it was $800 and it's really useless. If it works good, I will be a buyer.

Hi All,
But prob not worth the cost when it comes to sound quality. http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x...pscfc27499.jpg I may be wrong but never really saw the need for paying for a top-end sound system where there's lots of background noise from an engine, fan, tyres, exhaust etc. But, I don't mind paying for something which will do everything well....and it does. I'm also pleased to see they have addressed the problems of the piddly little control buttons. I notice that the advert shows an iPod/Phone connector but I've always found the bluetooth option on mine to be more than adequate for playing music and phone connectivity. My only other reservation is that the screen is not very big and and in a RHD car quite difficult to see during daylight (reflections), althought this should be much better for a LHD car. The verbal sat-nav instructions however are brilliant and on-point. Cheers, Paul |
I just wish they would have made the same unit without Navigation. I can't be alone in this, I have several newer cars with OEM in dash nav and I NEVER use it. I pull out my trusty IPhone. If they would have done that and the price was ~$800 USD or less I would do it just for the nice form factor.

Hi All,
I have one of the original units which I don't believe were available in the U.S. but I can confirm the sound quality is great and as good as you're ever going to need in a high performance sports car. http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x...pscfc27499.jpg I may be wrong but never really saw the need for paying for a top-end sound system where there's lots of background noise from an engine, fan, tyres, exhaust etc. But, I don't mind paying for something which will do everything well....and it does. Hey Paul, I've seen those Chronos before, where did you get that? RB Here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Heuer-Dash...item3aa36659c2 Cheers, Paul |
I would love a radio like this in my 964's but the price quoted in the article is scary.
|
I'm not so sure about this one. It doesn't appear to have any better sound shaping than the CDR-220, which is just treble/bass. The screen size and placement can't be great for navigation. The only thing that is really going for it is bluetooth, but that's an easy add-on to a stock radio. Luckily, it's at least absurdly expensive. ;)
|
What a bloody stupid, over priced, ugly piece of crap. Seriously - why would you bother? I am sure all owners of 964's also own a smartphone which has all these capabilities any how. Just sayin'....

Love this new version. But with sooo many other products that will undoubtably have better software, features and cheaper from giants like TomTom & Garmin etc I'm not buying. Especially considering it doesn't even feature digital radio... I'd expect it at that price to be 'future' proof.
It's definitely form over function. Although I'm very happy to see Porsche even producing this kind of 'niche' product. 2nd gen now, so there's clearly a market... |
The nav screen is so small that who will be able to see it while driving?
I agree with the others who say a 911 is too noisy for a large investment in a stereo. The only time I listen to my CDR-220 is with the engine off. |

I just wish the damned thing was available in the US...
|
I have had one ordered for 6 months already. Not available in the USA yet...something to do with the mapping.
|
nice that Porsche is still paying attention to the older models.
|
I'll believe it when I see it. They've been promising this thing in the US for years. Still not available.

Sorry to break in on this thread but I was wondering if this unit shows the album covers or just the text? In our 928's the radio is placed lower in the dash so I don't want te read...
|
If you go to "info" while playing a music source such as iPod, it shows album cover art.

It works great and the size and position of the sat nav really is no problem at all!
Sorry for the crappy pic, the only one I got and the car is alseep during https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...d2cd9edcbb.jpg the winter! :) My sat nav! But is that a 964? It sure looks lika a 964 CCU anyway! :) |
any updates on availability ?
|
no idea why anyone would bother with this, period blaupunkt and a dsp would be cheaper and better - actual period looks, streaming spotify, live googlemaps and handsfree phone...
you can even use siri on an iphone and have a better voice activated system than in the latest modern cars. get a flic button and you could even have wheel mounted volume/music/sat nav using ifttt |

I am not ashamed to admit not having a clue what you are talking about. DSP as in digital signal processing seems like software to me
|
DSP – Digital Sound Processor
this will explain it better than i can.. http://www.studioincar.com/digital-h...alogue-bodies/ basically you can bluetooth your phone into your existing headunit. This lets you either play your own music, stream from spotify/deezer etc. https://www.spotify.com/uk/ googlemaps sat nav with live traffic is handsdown better than any current manufacturer satnav system and will constantly be updated free siri is actually pretty good as a handsfree assistant (ring my wife, direct me home, open spotify and play etc.) flic buttons are very handy if you miss steering wheel mounted controls on satnav/stereo system also https://flic.io/ifttt horses for courses obviously but i think not many people are aware you can come up with a solution miles better in functionality and period looks than the porsche classic stereo for less |
