Default Question about International Wire Transfers for my Hard Top

XPost to Off-topic

Hey Folks,

So I'm trying my darndest to buy a d.Moris top for my 964, have everything picked out they're ready to ship out, etc.

What I'm running into though is my bank is giving me grief about the transfer - they want the exchange rate to be 1.39, which is what Western Union charges. Current exchange is 1.34. I'm a long time bankee with this group, and usually they're flexible, but they only use Western Union, and they also are charging me a $40 wire fee to boot.

They said I can wire in USD to the French bank in question and have them figure it out there. Any idea if this would work (say wire 1.02% of the requested amount at todays' exchange rate)?

Any other options for international wire transfers?

Basically I'm getting hit with a 5% tax before any taxes are paid! (and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get hit with import duties or some ridiculous thing as well, but at this point I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best).

I would go to the bank, and take out a money order for the amount in the currency you need, and FedEx it over night. Should be a lot cheaper.

I doubt they will want your US check over there.. Heck, even between Canada and US they sometimes don't want checks draft from the other country.

Paypal wouldn't work? Their fees are high but rates are good AFAIK.

Otherwise the best would be to find someone you can wire to and they give a French check to them.

My local credit union here does currency exchanges at the actual rates with no fees or exchange charges. They will even order you actual foreign currency for no extra fees. Might be worth looking into in your area.

Sorry to hear but your bank sucks and you may have to bite the bullet if you use them. How about calling Dominique and giving him your credit card? Simple and you'll most likely get a better rate with no fees, I know I do with mine. Another painless option is Paypal, all he has to do is send you an invoice and done. As far as the MFN duty rate, it should not be too bad or minimal if the proper Harmonized Code is used but make sure you don't need to setup a single transaction bond with a customs specialist.

He would still have the same dilemma with his bank charging him too much.
