Default Marine Blue C2 Updates Thread - Pic Heavy

Like many others, I have decided to create a thread to consolidate the updates I make to my car and at the same time share the story with the Rennlist community.

I bought the car back on December 2008, originally purchased as a daily driver but now reserved for fun at the weekends. The car was in excellent order, a 1990 C2 manual with 72k miles on the clock and with the exception of some light stone chips, she was in very good shape. Like most of us, my 64 has really embedded itself firmly into my soul and I certainly do plan on keeping hold of it. My intention is to keep the car close to standard and ensure any modifications I make can be reversed easily. Modifications to date are listed in my signature.

Here's a pic from day one…

A month into ownership and I slipped on some ice whilst walking my dog and broke my hip. An unusual injury for a man of 35 (at the time) and usually reserved for those in their 80s. This meant was I unable to drive my new toy for the next 5 months. Finally the day came when I could get back behind the wheel of this beauty, well for all of 4 days or so when a kind lady decided to drive into me. I was gutted, but off the car went to a Porsche Approved Body Repair Centre and month later she looked in tip top shape once again. They really did an A Class job on the repairs, which included a new rear quarter panel.

Fast forward a few years of very happy motoring, the car developed a bit of a flat spot through the rev range. Here is a thread I started during my quest to resolve an annoying flat spot.

https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...teve-wong.html

With these issues now resolved and the car running beautifully, I decided to address the increasing number of stone chips on the bonnet and some early signs of rust appearing around the scuttle. The wheels were also starting to look a little aged.

With Tom at Lemass Automotive appearing highly recommended on these pages, I decided to book the car in for a cosmetic spruce up, in for form of a full front-end respray and alloy wheel refurb. Whilst the car was in with Lemass, they also discovered some rust around the rear window. There were also some marks on the roof, where a previous owner had used a poor quality car cover, so I decided to get the whole lot done whilst they were at it.

Lemass did a nice job on the car. The wheels look great as well, although I was a little disappointed that only the front face of the wheels were treated to lacquer during the refurb and the outer rims do feel a bit rough to the touch, but hey I can always get those redone again if they start to age. I will be applying plenty of polish to help them look fresh for longer.

Default Time For A Full Engine Rebuild

During a 12k mile service back in September, my specialist found a mysterious piece of metal in the sump.

Name: IMG_0718.JPG
Views: 6188
Size: 69.3 KB

First thoughts were that it could be a bit of bearing, or a bit of big-end although. The car ran really well with good pressure, had no knocking sounds, only a few small oil leaks and all the head studs were fine. We were originally under the impression that bearing material would not be magnetic and this piece of metal was. We soon discovered that this wasn’t the case, after offering a magnet to the a bearing on another open 964 engine in the workshop. We placed the piece of metal over the Intermediate Shaft Bearing of the other 964 engine and it was a perfect fit.

After posting on here for some fellow Rennlister feedback it was suggested that it could also be distributor shim washer material.

Following a lengthy discussion with my specialist we decided to avoid the potential risk of causing more damage and took the decision to take the car off the road and instructed Purely 9 to carry out a full engine rebuild. I have a huge amount of confidence in Paul Steven's abilities, not one of the better known specialists but he worked for Porsche at AFN Guildford for 20 years, before starting his own business (Purely 9) around 10 years ago. He also used to carry out engine rebuilds for GT One, so he knows his stuff and is extremely honest.

Once the engine was dropped, Paul began the strip down, starting with the distributor to just be sure it wasn’t just a piece of shim washer. Paul felt this was very unlikely, but for my peace of mind he agreed to check this first. As he progressed further Paul discovered that one half of the Intermediate Shaft Bearing in my engine was indeed badly worn and had rubbed through the outer bearing surface… that appeared to confirm things for us. However, it does seem odd that only one half of the bearing was worn, so Paul is going to investigate this mystery further to ensure the problem is rectified.

The car has since been returned to me minus the engine, so I can keep it tucked away in the garage whilst the engine is rebuilt. I plan to visit the workshop in between Christmas and the New Year to discuss our plan of action for the build, which at moment looks likely to include a set of 993 RS cams with less than 500 miles use surplus from another customer’s engine build (he’s now decided to rebuild again to a 993 Twin Turbo) and a new custom Steve Wong chip to match this upgrade.

More updates soon...

I certainly am Frank, it should be pretty tip top once it's finished. The interior will be next on the list, but only minor work compared to BB's

Thanks, I think I'll need it

It is quite a strange one. The bearing wear is very unusual for a car with 88k miles. I think the first thing to check is the bank feed.

Finally I have found time to update the thread with the engine build progress.

After a lot of research and discussions with various specialists the build was spec’ed with all the usual work and components associated with a full engine rebuild plus the following:

1. Porsche Motorsport 993 RS Cams
2. Schrick valve springs & titanium retainers
3. ARP headstuds
4. Steve Wong 'Custom’ chip

Although the car was already running a standard Steve Wong with great results, which we might have been able to use with the cams, Steve felt to get the most benefit from the modification, we should have a custom chip programmed to a) provide the additional fuel typically required especially after 4500 rpm from the additional airflow to achieve the proper air fuel ratio for max power and prevent a lean situation that could compromise engine life, and b) to address a potential low rpm idle stalling that comes from the lumpier idle.

Some of the goodies:

During the build, I made various visits to Purely 9 to see the progress and take some pic. For someone with a very basic knowledge of the mechanical workings of the 964, it was fascinating to see it all taking shape in various stages…

By now the engine was reassembling nicely so it was time to get the car back to the workshop…

For the finishing touches, I fancied a bit of colour inside the engine bay and decided on one of my favourite Porsche colours, Riviera Blue
