My first Porsche : 964-C4
Hello everyone,
Attached are some pictures of my recent buy : a 964-C4 from 1990.
I met the Porsche world at 10, in the back seats of my stepfather's 2.4 Orange Targa and I guess the virus entered my body&mind at that time.
More recently (10y ago though) I borrowed my best pal's copycat 2.4 (pictured as well) and travelled as a passenger in a friend's 996.
It's only recently when I received some unexpected money, that I decided to use it in a "wise" way...
Ok, Buying a Porsche isn't this wise, but considering the constant prices rise, maybe it is after all !
Anyway, here are the specs of the thing :
"Amazon Green", a very cameleon color going from green to blue and back, depending on the hour and sun. Gorgeous if you ask me. The most similar picture is the close-up of the cup mirror.
I'm not super fan of the light emerald green leather interior, with the wooden inserts, but I can live with it. (if anyone want to swap with a full black interior, feel free to ask !)
This car was a demo in a German Porsche Center on its first 30000km, so it was equiped with many options : sunroof, Cup 17", alarm, all seat options, OEM phone, etc...
Was imported in France at 100K km and had few owners before me. Now has a cup exhaust and a lovely sound !
It now has 202.000km, got it at a fair price because the clutch needed to be replaced, even though it was regulary serviced at PC and other specialists.
It's going to the workshop tomorow for the clutch replacement.
My other toys are a Buell S1 1998 (very collector) rebuilt by myself a few years ago, a Yamaha Tmax for everyday use (Paris is VERY crowed) and a Westfield (Lotus 7 replica) for occasional Track Days and super-fun curvy roads trips.
"Light is Right" was saying it's conceptor Colin Chapman, and the C4 is 2,5 heavier, so I guess I won't use it on tracks but the engine and road handling is very good as well, so I guess I'll like it as much for longer trips. (I love driving and traveling !)
See you on the tech-talks...

Hey everyone,
here is an update for all upgrades and repairs that happened during last 18 month :
As I said in first post, clutch and flywheel has been replaced by this cool Porsche Specialist that is living in a Farm (looks opposite of PC !), with gearbox and crank seals that ruined the clutch (10€ spare during previous clutch change, remember that !)
Monomass LFW seemed to be a good idea and i don't regret that choice at all !
Revs thank me too and downshift as well, so cool modification !
My genuine Cup Wheels were sent to be sanded, scratch fixed and rebalanced by this local specialist (RC3D).
Meanwhile I went for the Mark II Fuchs, 17" x 9"&7", the lightest 17" wheels for 964, on top of being the coolest, IMO.
Rubbers are Michelin PS2. they are using fast but you couldn't expect more efficiency, in all weather conditions ! Love them !
Becker 220 with a default screen was replaced by a Kienzle bluetooth, SD, USB, etc... except for the red dominant color (which doesn't hurt me as it hurts some purists), it fits perfectly in the dashboard with an old school look that made me go for it in the first place, thanks to a guy's post on FB.
Windshield areas needed rebuilt, and it was also the good time for the antena roof hole delete.
Before:
In the process :
As the rear blower was broken and not repairable, I went for the carbon bypass :
Meanwhile, I replaced the engine in the blower, but it was not fitted back in the car.
I like the look as is.
Another easy mod was the fitting of a custom colored dial in a spare Rev Gauge.
Printed by "porschedials" with a RAL ref.
Day look is perfect. Night use is not as cool because of the non-reflective numbers, but I don't care that much about that.
I used an easy and cheap recolor varnish, for a cleaner look of the rear lights.
Please note the clear varnish with hardener injected in the can just before using : protects the colored one that don't like soap and other cleaning products.
25€ better than 850€, is it not ?
But the best upgrade of all was these Bilstein B16 (PSS9-PSS10) shocks and with independant compression settings.
Pretty stiff but they provide a huge difference on the curvy roads I love so much !
They also improved slightly the braking power by reducing even more the stoping distance.
The 4 supporting mounts were also changed.
Expensive parts (850€ for the 4 !) but amazingly solid, considering the 210000km they had on the clock and still usable. (according to my mecanic) !
But anyway, I'd rather have new parts all around.
Same with triangle bushings.
25 years and 210000km seemed to be enough, and as I intent to keep the car, I'd rather replace all chassis parts when I have a chance.
Last upgrade was this stainless steel SCART muffler with 2 outputs (even though the left one is currently closed)
A Cat bypass was already fitted on the car.
The sound is exactly what I was hoping for : decent on low revs and idle, but with a low pitch sound when revving up. Perfect sound to the ears !
Please note the home-made brackets, from a single stainless flat steel purchased next corner, and custom shaped, speaking gently with... a hammer !
The most difficult step was drilling holes in there with a hand driller...
Next time I'll ask my favorite workshop, it will spare my tools and my nerves...
Next steps will be the replacement of front disks, and engine mounts as well.
I also need to fix engine oil leaks. Not much (only half a liter /1000km which is a very low consumption from what I read. ie : half a quarter for 600 miles) but enough to have the engine dirty in no time.
... too be continued !!
Meanwhile, here are some pictures taken last summer, when the insurance car value has been rised, with an "expert certification" (don't know the english term, it defines the minimum value refund by insurance in case of crash or steal.
The new value was a cool justification of every € spent or invested in rebuilt or renew since the purchase !
