Looking for three point rear seatbelts for 964 Cab

I am looking for a three point rear seatbelt solution for my 964 cab. Obviously, the challenge is the upper mount. I found these threads with some approaches.

I also noticed that Rennlist member Stuart Q's company Quickfit has done a set up for a 944 cab that would work - see: http://www.quickfitsbs.com/gallery_porsche.php (scroll down to the 944 cab pics, on the right).

Any other insights would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You might be able to refit a 993 rear seat belt assembly. The upper shoulder belt reel is in the middle, as opposed to the outside.

No insights but I used Quickfit to fit 3 point seat belts in to my 944 (coupe) and they were great.

I'd give them a call and see what they have to say / recommend

Thanks very much! I thought about doing that, but didn't think it was possible because the fold-down 964 rear seat backs don't have room between them for the seatbelt tower. However, after looking at the pictures in the thread that you referenced, I can see that I might be able to replace my 964 fold-down rear seatbacks with 993 seatbacks to address that issue. Another issue that I'll have to address is whether the seatbelt tower will prevent me from using my windscreen - hmmm....

you can't... not without a mod for the upper anchor point. The rear 964 seats were not designed with the 3point system in place. That's why the 92-94 Cab versions had the luggage dump rather than seats. The 993 has a solid unit for the rear seat backs, with an integrated 3-point belt system.

Just noticed this thread.

Yes it can be done but using them is a little complicated.

The upper mount has to come off the shelf otherwise the seat belts will be a waste of time and you may as well stick with the Lap straps.

However the roof is the issue.

We have devised a way to fit the upper mount on the parcel shelf and the seat belts work with no issues with the roof up, but cannot be used when you fold the roof down.
In order to allow you to use them with the roof down, you need to disconnect the lower mounting point at the wheel arch (we have devised a quick release fitting) unzip the rear window and pass the seat belt through the window and over the folded roof.
It is then reconnected to the lower mounting.
So, as long as the rear windo can be unzipped, this will work.
The seat belt has to be a static belt.

I will have a look to see if we have any photos.

You can PM me if you want any more detailed info, or if what I've written above makes no sense. I can also give you number to call me directly on.

I've had a quick look on our website, but we only show the 944/68 cabs.

I will have a look through archives on Monday as I am sure we will have something.

For 993's this method will not work as the rear window cannot be unzipped.

I just looked at the seat delete post by Curve lover.

In all the 993 Cabs I have seen, never have I seen lap and diagonal seat belts in one, they have always been Lap Straps.

Has anyone else seen this, was it a factory option.

We have built similar frames for Camper vans in the past and some other types of vehicle where a top anchor point is required.

If anyone has a 964 or 993 cab in the UK and would interested to see if this can be retro fitted, we would be very keen to see if we can carry this out.

As per Curve Lovers thread.

This must be a US spec, as I said before never seen this in a UK car!

Yes, the US DOT mandated 3 point rear seat belts starting in 1992. In light of its then dire finances, Porsche took the easy way out and deleted the rear seats from 92-94 964 cabs to avoid the 3 point rear belt requirement, substituting the parcel shelf. For the 993 cab, Porsche designed a more elegant solution in which the upper mounts were moved inboard to a newly created seat belt tower, rather than trying to locate upper mounts in the sidepanels where they would conflict with the convertible top mechanism. I started thinking that I would need to have upper mounts welded into the tub,but am now thinking that retrofitting a 993 set-up might be best. There are a lot of Porsche recyclers and so I'm pretty sure I can find a 993 cab setup from a wrecked car. My little guy is presently in the front passenger seat (with the airbag disabled using the euro RS harness), but it would be great to be able to drive as a family with my wife. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts.

Stuart - I can't thank you enough for the excellent work that you're doing to add safety to classic cars. John

Maybe Curve Lover still has the frame work he removed from his 993!

JJJMCD 06-02-2014 01:01 AM

Yes, that would be the best solution, since he has a tan interior like me and doesn't need it anymore. I sent him a pm. If not, I will try the three main US Porsche recyclers and see if they've got a 993 cab rear seats/belts setup for sale. Thanks again for your help!

Thread revival...

Did anyone pursue this any further? Something not discussed is the fact that 993 Cab seats don't fold down so the boot cover interferes with the shoulder belts when/if someone is trying to sit in the back and the top is down. And, you haven't been able to find someone small enough to squeeze back there the boot still isn't tucked away as nice 'n neat as it should. I suppose everything works fine with the top up.

I'm looking to turn my 993 rear seats (black) back to stock. Are 964 Cab rear seats any different than Coupe or Tip? Anyone know if I'll need to source different belts or anything else?...how the heck do you guys use those PET files??
