Pinging or Ticking under load (w/ video)
Hopefully you can hear the sound..it's pretty loud in the cab and only happens when the engine is at full throttle under load. Typically I would think timing or pre detonation due to low octane fuel. I'm running 91 octane that is fresh. Here's the video..

Hem, have you checked your dual distributer, if the belt snapped it can cause all sorts. 964 have got a knock sensor which retards the timing a few degrees at each knock so you would experience a loss of power. Think it retards it 3 or 4 times 4 every knock. If your dizzy has failed in the wrong position you could have huge advance.
I'd remove the dizzy cap and see if the slave is moving and in the correct position.
You definitely hear the pinking. Some tech guru will be on soon to advise no doubt but I'd look there first.

ok, pulled the dizzy caps and the slave moves freely independant of the other one. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that shouldn't do that if the belt was intact....correct?
Ok, I'm going to pull the distributor...wish me luck!

Ok...distributor out and yep..the belt is toast. There are just fragments of belt in there. So now what? I can't get the primary rotor off..seems to be frozen on but I'll get it..hopefully without cracking the dust caps. I'm probaly going to sequester myself into a white, magnetic tent and try to rebuild this thing myself. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

It's not a tough job to do, just need to get ALL the right parts needed to do the job. Did you time the engine before you pulled the Dizzy? Thought I would ask. :-))

uh-oh...no, i didn't. Am I screwed? Unless by time you mean did I make sure I was at Z1 @ TDC and noted where the rotor was pointing (which was at the #1 plug notch on the primary)...which yes, I did take care of all that.

ok, phew! Email has been sent to Steve..I'm in Boise, ID so depending on his turnaround time I may be able to have him dial it in and get it back to me if I spend a little extra for overnight shipping to Portland and back...assuming he is just sitting around waiting for 964 dist rebuilds to come in the door..heh!

Steve w did mine. It was a really rather fast turn around. And the job was done well. New bearings, new belt...much better job than I could have done, and not something I want to get wrong...

Ok, Steve W. got me all dialed with a fresh rebuild of my distributor..since the belt had been broken since I bought it, I've just finished going for a shake down run for the first time with the car firing on all 12 plugs. Quite a difference to say the least. Check that one off the list.
