964 versus 993 Convertible Top Purchase
 

I am concerned that not being able to unzip the top when opening/closing (new 993 top) will crease the rear window much faster than unzipping the top (new 964 top).
I have always unzipped the window on the original top. Any comments?
Anyone replaced a 964 or a 993 top?

GAHH makes two (2) types of replacement tops for a 964.

German Canvas, which is a polyester fabric (OEM material) and Sonnendeck Canvas, which is a heavier weight, cotton fabric.

The 993 top is a one piece, no zipper vinyl window and smaller window area, but the top has nice lines (IMHO).

The 964 top is a two piece top, zippered window, and a larger window area.

Personally I think the older cars look funny with the 993 style top... If I had a cab Id stick with what it was born with. You may have a good point about the zip out rear window as well, just another reason to stick with an original style top.

Its nice to unzip the rear and open the fronts on any nice day at higher speeds and let the air run through with little or NO wind resistance. With rear window closed the cabin is a trap for the wind. Go with the original style to have the option. Must agree though, the 993 style looks very nice!

I replaced my top about 6 months ago with the GAHH German Canvas and very happy with it. I went with the 993 because I like the looks better than the original. The zipper was not an issue for me because I had never unzipped the original one.

I´ve done the same and I am very happy with it! Zipper is only important with low temperature.

I love my 993 top, it cleans up the lines of the car. It is not for the purists but i figure if porsche designers liked it then it must be ok.

The 993 top looks great on the 964 and I am thinking of making the switch when/if I need a new top. For those who have had it for a while... How has the rear window held up to being folded?

My window with the 964 top lasted 21 years and I did not unzip it for the last 11 years. I don't see any complaints on the 993 board :)

Wondering what a new top from a GOOD experienced shop run$ nowadays???

My top cost $1,100 and I have a local upholstery guy that has a garage shop do the work.
he charged me $400 to put it on. But he knocked off a few dollars because he got sick and it delayed the top 2 weeks. He did a great job and it was over the winter time so I did not care that he took forever to get done.

I had a GAHH Sonnenland 993-style top installed on my '91 C2 cab two years ago. It looks great - much more in keeping with the car's flowing lines than the two-piece top. For me, the couple hundred dollars of extra cost for the higher quality Sonnenland fabric, over the cheaper Sonnendeck fabric, was a no-brainer.

I never unzipped the back window on my two-piece top during 14 years of ownership and it did not create any permanent crease in the window. The same has been true for the 993 top during the two years that I've had it. A slight crease is visible immediately after putting up the top but, after a little while in the sun, the crease goes away. I do put a towel down to minimize scratches from where the window folds over on itself and make sure to never put the top down when the rear window is dirty.

Installation cost was around $1000. The top cost around $800 and the headliner was another $100 or so.

+993 they're tops look great on our cars. Mind you the 964 does look awesome topless. Your car looks awesome.

Bahh never heard of them. They must be Porsche Club members. That reminds me, should really buy another years PCGB membership... pays for itself in insurance discounts. :)

I have a question about the section at the rear frame where the older type is connected by screws to the frame to bolt the rear an top part.

Is there no need to have that same type of fixation with the new 993 top.
