Help me with a new Hobby - free stuff

Hello Rennlisters , It is a cold snowy winter here in the Midwest and my 964 is tucked away from the snow and the salt until spring. To ease my pain I have taken up a new hobby. I ventured out on Kickstarter and purchased a 3D printer.

It is amazing and addictive (almost as much as a PCar) . I am an IT guy with a Degree in electronic engineering so I like to make things. But I would like some help from you so that I can tie my love of Porsches and 3D printing together.
I have 2 requests for help

1 ) ideas … what can I make for our cars and print on my printer? Now mind you I am thinking of more cosmetic things, I do not plan to re-engineer something that came out of the Porsche factory. I am thinking of things like inner door handles, Knobs, Cassette tape holder replacements (would love to do front splitters but that is a bit big). So if you have any ideas shoot them to me to play with.

2) My second plea for help is for a couple of testers for some phone holders I have developed specifically for the Porsche. I love gadgets and I use my phone in my vehicles for navigation, music ..etc. but I hate those one holder fits all holders with Velcro and suction cups that never stay and then you have to plug in your power cord …. So I decided to design a phone holder specific to the car and to the phone. I have 3 phones that I have designs for : Samsung Galaxy S4 , IPhone 5s and the Droid bionic. I have 4 holders for these, 2 for the Porsche , 1 for my wife’s Audi A4 and a tape cassette mount for my Toyota sequoia which is more of a universal fit. I can design for different phones as they are requested.

I would eventually like to sell these on the side for about $50 each, I have seen a universal fit design for the 911 made of metal for $140 which looks really nice but again it is a one holder fits all type of thing.

What I need your help with is I need someone to test my 2 phone holders for the Porsche and give me feedback on how they work on the road. I would test them but it is not much of a test sitting in my snowed in garage making Varoom Varoom sounds .
I will give my tester a free phone holder in exchange for their feedback and usage.

I have 2 to give away
1 ) Ashtray holder for either the Iphone 5 or Galaxy S4
2) Cigarette lighter version for the Samsung Galaxy S4

Pictures are below ,
The first one is my Ashtray holder. It can be used with a usb power cord attached or without.
The second one is my cigarette lighter holder. It has a built in USB power source that charges the phone and holds it in place. (This is only for the Samsung Galaxy for now, I am working on the iphone 5 version but the propriety charging cable is a pain)

So that’s all I got for now. Anyone Game ?

how about a replacement for the tape/CD holder aft of the parking brake? maybe turn it into a cup holder or a small storage bin?

John Rygg 03-01-2014 06:34 PM

I like that idea . There is a replacement cup holder for that area . How do we improve on it?
Maybe one cup holder and small storage combined. Or cup holder and phone holder combined.
Thanks for the idea.

This looks great.

I probably won't have my car out for another couple of weeks - but would be happy to test out the iPhone ashtray prototype. I'm a bit far, but you can say it's been testing in extreme weather in Canada!

Either way you can put my down for one once you go into production.

Another idea is a cup holder (my kids like to travel with drinks). I have an aluminum one that fits on the passenger seat rail. It's not ideal, but it works.

Thanks cliff . If I don't get any warm weather testers I will take you up on your offer. I will mark you down to follow up either way.

How about cup holders behind the storage tray on either side for the back seats.

Cheers John. Look forward to hearing from you.

The storage tray, former cassette holder location would be excellent as well. Even if it can only fit one cup, it would still be useful.

Thanks for the ideas I will start to mock up something this week and posts some drawings.

I have a samsung galaxy and would love to give it a try. That is a very useful thing. I am currently using my 964 frequently.

good for you - great idea, 964 really need a place to put the iPhone (sad, but true) - stuck to the window in some cheap holder just not do it justice !

I'm willing to help with testing and or measurements or whatever as it would be very nice to have a proper cell phone holder.
