Default Another ZDDP Thread

How's it going everyone?

I've been reading nonstop for the last few days about the different oils, different ZDDP levels, etc.

To say the least, I think I've made myself a bit paranoid!

That being said, I've come across the Mobil1 15w50 and the Mobil1 V-Twin oil that seems to have enough Zinc and Phosphorus.

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...duct_Guide.pdf

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-15...Specifications

Keeping that mind, I've also been thinking about running a Redline or Motul and then just adding the Redline additive to get the ZDDP levels up.

Is anyone on the board doing this? I know a lot of guys like Brad Penn oil but I don't think I want to run a non-synthetic.

Would be interested to hear what guys think about some of the oils mentioned when combined with the Redline additive.

Thanks in advance, beyond happy to finally have my first 964!

V-Twin is a great aircooled Porsche oil. Don't use additives in your oil.

Joe Gibbs DT50 is a high ZDDP oil for air cooled cars. Motul is good too. Lots of track rats use Brad Penn, so it's proven too.

Start running UOA's and you'll learn a lot about your car and your oil selections.

15W50 is good, equivalent is Motul competition 300V 15W50, you don't want to much of ZDDP

I use the 10W60 because of our hot climate here in south of France,
I agree no additives in engine oil

Are you running the 300V 10w-60?

Thought the Zinc and phosphorus levels were low with that oil?

Just putting my oil cooler and pipes back together and was looking at filling her up with Castrol GTX 15w 40w for £15.99 per 4l at Costco.

Any good?

You need a 50 weight oil not a 40.

Thanks for the feedback. I plan on running a UOA on what's in the car right now. I'm thinking I'll be running the V-Twin Oil this summer then will test again.

All these threads and theories have me freaking out!

Since when? The 964 was delivered with a 40. When Porsche switched to synthetic in 1992, they stayed with a 40. In the early nineties when the 964 had coking problems in the USA because aftermarket shops were using whatever they were using, and Porsche added mobil 15w50 to the list because it didn't have the coking problems and was readily available in bulk in the USA, PAG still used a 40. Every oil list from Porsche since has said a 40 was fine, although they did remove the 15w-50... And everywhere in the world, including when you have your 964/993 serviced at the dealership next door to the factory still fills with a ???

Right....

Still confused?

Didn't want to go below 15w as it is my understanding that the lower the number the more viscous and leaky the oil becomes?

My engine is dry as a bone, just worried about springing leaks

I can't think of a single 993 owner on Rennlist that's using a 40 weight oil. If you're saying a 40 weight oil is the preferred oil in a 964 like 15 W 40 or 20 W 40 then I stand corrected.

I tried the Joe Gibbs oil and I noticed that my car ran lower oil pressure than Brad Penn. I have switched back and will stay with Brad Penn as it seems to work well and has a decent following. I don't put a huge amount of miles between oil changes anyway. I think picking one reputable oil with the high ZDDP levels needed and staying with it is the best practice.
