The silly little question thread ...

I’ve never waited too long after running the car to temperature to know when it closes. I always drain the thermostat first. Makes sure you have big oil pans as it comes out quickly. Make sure the pans are clean before you start (that way you know if anything found came out of the car) and measure what comes out as putting the same back in won’t overfill it.

At idle with a closed thermostat (cold oil) the engine was designed to start/run with only 6 quarts. So its almost impossible to under fill before firing up for the first time.

FWIW, I consistently over last years use 10 quarts. Fill 8 quarts with the engine off, start engine and fill one more. Take car for a drive to get to temperature and slowly fill last quart when engine is at operating temp. Check with dip stick. 10 quarts every time.

As Jason stated above- put in the min, i use 7, he uses 6, start the car. Bring it up to temp, add slowly. And then when you think you are "low but kinda done"....stop. Drive it as was stated in the last post. And do not add more unless it needs it. Low on the dip and low on the gauge is plenty.

I start it up after 6 bottles, then slowly add 3.5 more. My Slate car always took a total of 9.5 liters before the gauge started to show oil.
Feels good to do an oil change!

Yeah, my previous car was rear ended when a buddy's foot slipped off his clutch (now, I wish his car was a Tip!). It turned out great in the end, but was a roller coaster for a while.
I often mention my previous car in posts, because I've found each car to be subtly different. Just want to be accurate when I describe my 964 experiences.
Had my old car for over 10 years and did a lot to it; I've only had this car a couple of months so still getting used to it's subtle differences.
Haven't changed the oil on the cobalt car yet, so don't know if it's a 9.5 or a 10 liter car yet. Either way, the oil level gauge on both cars seems accurate.

Thanks guys, I take everything on board. I think I'll go with johns idea of measuring what comes out and putting that amount back in.

Indeed. Full oil capacity being 11.5 litres but only 9 litres required for oil and filter change. I aim to start with 8.5 litres as a first instant fill, but knowing what you drained is always an interesting baseline I guess.

Looking for a size recommendation for a two or three prong puller to remove the alternator fan. I've seen pics of a three prong puller being used with the engine in situ but can't find a size for the jaws. Available sizes range from 75mm through to 200mm jaws.
Thanks,
Neil

Cheers Dingo, that's exactly what I was looking at picking up. From some discussion it seems like its easier to remove the whole housing than trying to get just the fan of whilst still in situ.
