Default Odd (terrifying/$$$) noise

Happy Holidays all....

I started my car ('91, oak metallic green, 80k miles) up this weekend to move it, and UH OH. Sounds fine up to about 1800rpm/25% torque, then the motor gets all loud and farty. Like un-muffled-VW-farty.

It sounds like either there is either an exhaust issue (doubt I could be that lucky) or the head is leaking. Id assume that might be caused by broken head studs or some kind head warping issue ?

I have noticed the car has been dripping a bit more oil over the last 18 months.

Ugh.

My questions to the group are:

Has anyone experienced something similar ?

Do you think its safe to drive, or should I just flatbed it to the shop?

Assuming there is no miracle "easy-ish" fix - sounds like next stop is (at least) a top end rebuild. Yay. Merry Christmas !

Have you checked to see that your airbox cover is still firmly attached as if that was loose it would change the engine note when you're accelerating?
