Default Brief History of the 964

A fellow 964 enthusiast pointed me to this website page. Very informative about the timeline and history of the all the 964 models, complimented by some nice pics and video.

Thanks for the link Boxsey, I found this quote "High suspension US-model - it's not that the roads are bad in USA, but as the American national sport is to sue everybody for everything, it is safer to sell the Porsches with off-road-style ground clearance."

Are the US models really a lot higher?

Yeah.. it is for mandatory bumper height. I don't know the exact difference but I think it was around 1.5 "

Steve, thats a really interesting website. I've learnt a lot from that, definitely worth book marking.

I noticed the different light weight door cards and I see the one Jack has just bought are an OE spec not just an after market option.

I thought I had seen all the 964 sites out there. I love this one, great information some of my favorite Porsche AG photos too!

Anyone know of any good websites with more LM information?
I've read very little about this car... wonder where Porsche has this one tucked away?

Great resource!

One error, however, is the author's claim that US 964s came with the airbag wheel from the beginning. Every '89 C4 model I've ever seen had the non airbag wheel.

It's good to hear that you all find it useful. All credit goes to the guy who put it together and to fellow enthusiast and 964 cup car owner, Hacki, who alerted it to me.

I particularly liked the details about the ultra rare C4 lightweight and the idea that Porsche put so much effort into building a variant that they had no real customers for!

I'm sure that if anyone spots any inaccuracies, the author would be pleased to hear about them to put them right.

It was actually the US insurance companies that fought for the original federal standard (Europe had one since at least 1958) and then years later (late 70s-early 80's) the automotive manufacturers fought to have the bumper impact test speed cut in half to reduce their costs. What's interesting is that the european regulations of the time (ECE Regulation No,. 42) tested at 445mm while the american test could be run anywhere between 400-500mm. The offsets were both at 60 degrees. So... I'm really curious to know which part of the FMVSS test the 964 failed, requiring the higher suspension? Or was it really a PCNA thing because they were worried about warranty claims?
