Purchased a '93 964 RS America and I can't figure out what the headlights are.
The high beams don't work via the control stalk on the steering wheel(headlights shut off completely when high beam is toggled), and it has HID/xenon bulbs that are insanely bright(seems like high beams always are on). I can't figure out what the headlight rings are or what the lens is and/or what my options are. Ideally I'd like to get stock looking lenses/rings and keep the HID as I think they are real since there appears to be a ballast in foam tucked behind the lenses.
Someone put Carrera/sc lamp housings on the car. Just ditch them and go to the junkyard and get a set of stock housings, they will swap right in, trim rings and all.
Yes, those are the old 'sugar scoop' lights. There's no provision for high beams which are usually separate with HIDs. Another issue is running HID lamps with a reflector-style lamp like you have. The beam pattern will screw up the HID light output.
Can't find any at online junkyards and don't have anything local to check at. Best bet to get the H4 conversion from Pelican? Will that include everything I need or will I need additional adapters or trim rings, gaskets etc?
The conversion will bolt in, only question is the wiring - what if anything did the PO do to the old wiring. You can use the H5 to H4 adapter that Pelican sells. There's three wires in the original H5 connector, they splice into the H5 adapter which then plugs into the H4 bulbs.
Aside from that, you might need new headlamp-to-fender gaskets, cheap enough to just pick up a pair.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys. Much appreciated. I'll take apart the headlight again and check the connector and take some pictures if needed.
HID with H4s are better than HIDs with H5s but they are still too bright. Too much upward diffusion and almost no beam cutoff!
It's a track car that won't see much if any road use or night use. I'd just like to have the proper looking headlights and something that works if/when it's needed.

Dont buy the H5 to H4 adapter's from Pelican, they are crap. Suitable for a vintage VW (actually came in a wolfsburg west aftermarket box). I brought this to their attention and they are workng on a better part from another vendor.
