IIRC, when the engine carrier is raised, the bottom of it rests against the engine mounts (metal on metal).

Yes, something to be aware of when lifting a 964/993 this way, is that they have a habit of leaking out.

I've been using Kai's approach for years. Just be sure to use a piece of wood or hockey puck between the jack and the engine case when lifting the rear by the engine and make sure to lift at the center of engine.

This is the way I do it and it works fine. If you just want to raise the front I don't think you would even need to put the front wheels on 2x6s first.
