This may qualify as a stupid question, but would it be better to do all of part of this job from the top? Would the starter be accessible with the airbox removed?

If your starter is making this noise, I strongly recommend parking your car until you can fix it. I drove mine this way one day too long and the starter nose cone disintegrated, sending chunks of it into the bellhousing. The nose cone is specific to Tiptronic starters, but the ring gear, bushing and possibly the trans case are at risk of damage on G50 cars aswell.
