crested painted center caps

There are several versions. Ebay is usually a good source however finding the correct vintage for our cars is becoming very hard. If you don't mind the newer crest there are many available. 964 vintage caps have Porsche in Gold lettering vs black and are very hard to come by last set I saw sold for well over $250 and needed refurbishment. Otherwise the black lettered versions can be had cheap.

I know those were available for the earlier cars and 928 with 16" wheels but the factory supplied caps for the Cup I's and Speedlines looked like these with the recessed circle and slightly smaller crest. I believe the others are plastic caps the later caps were cast metal.

hi, i'm from france and usually look at the post on rennlist .
sure it's a valuable source of inspiration for many task and help for other technical problem that we all have with our car ... ( 964 C4 1991 for me )
i'm very happy to post for my first time .. specially if i can help or give some infos ... even if it's not technical ( excuse me for not having made any presentation)
share this info is also passion
so to answer the question : it's not plated but epoxy painted ..
it's epoxy "gold look" and some cleaning acid products are very "aggressive" with the paint .
so the gold look are going away with the time ...
i try ( for curiosity purpose too ) to replate the emblems .
i try some gold paint ... not fine ..
so plating seem the good solution.
a long long long way ... because they are made of aluminum ( raw aluminum .. not mixed with other metals .. just aluminum ... ) .
very very difficult to plate but doable .
i have made many "test and try" so now my badges are a little bit "rough" now .
on the 4 badges , one is realy almost unplatable now but 2 of them are almost jewelry look !
i'm looking for 4 new "old" badges to retry another plating ..
for information :
first use diluted caustic to remove the epoxy .. very hard not to go too far and damage the aluminum .
the relief ( in french ? ) is vbery deep so a VERY GOOD cleaning in ultrasonic is mandatory ( i try to skip this step but ... it was a very bad idea .. )
a claning solution
a activatin gsolution
then a zincate solution to zincate first
the nickel plating on zinc
then gold plating on nickel .
some polishing give more brilliant and shine finish .
if you are interested i had made a long post with pictures on a french forum
http://forum964passion.xooit.fr/t150....htm?start=210
i can upload some other pics here if you want .
some try with gold paint
after a bit polishing of aluminum
the kit from uk :
zincate :
the nickel plating step :
finaly without polishing ...
i had replate my hood crest too as it is made of brass ... really too easy comparred to alu just gold plate and it's ok
And a big hello from France
