OMG look what I did to my power steering pump. What can I do?!
 

My reseal project on my 92 C2 was going so well- lots of new gaskets (valve and chain covers), o rings, power coated my tins and carrier (after welding Rennline's reinforcement piece)...I was getting closer to the end and turned up the heat a bit by wrenching on workday evenings so I can drive sooner (I miss driving the 964 beast and am anxious for my first autocross it this summer).

Then enter the power steering pump- I get a good jump on starting the project early Tuesday evening and due to various frustrations (due to it being the first time) I stopped at midnight. Replaced the belt, the camshaft seal ring and the o ring on the other side and was putting it back together when I noticed a gap in the housing. Long story short, instead of just removing the pump from the housing I had opened it up (releasing the ps fluid- messy but at least I had anticipated it and was prepared below) when removing it.

I think when I opened it a bolt retaining clip must have fell into it (albeit it seems impossible) anyway when I closed it something wasn't right and it was difficult to spin. I seperated the pieces entirely and found a freshly damaged gasket and a chipped piece in the pump. I also found what appears to be a bolt retaining clip in there

I can't afford a new pump. Anyone know where I can acquire just the damaged piece? Also anyone have a clue what the "retaining clip" is from?

Oof that sucks.

Buy a used complete pump from a scrapper and then sell off the unused parts. IMO it is highly unlikely you'll find someone selling just that part unless you find someone who specializes in rebuilding these things.

Cannabalise a s/h pump i think. You may well find the 944/968 pump has the same innards and may be cheaper and more widely available.

The extra part you have there isn't something that I recognize from when I had mine apart. It may be a sort of flow restrictor that sits in the end of one of the inlet/exit pipes. It may have popped out and slid between the pump top plate and when you tightened it down you crushed it and cracked the top plate.

I'd recommend taking the pump right out of the engine bay when you reassemble. And go easy on the torque on those bolts - 18lbft or 25nm.

Give him tools, send him to school, and this still happens ................ :)

We've all done stupid **** like this. Some have switch to electric PS pumps. It's nothing that money can't fix.

Call the guys down in Hayward, CA at PartsHeaven. They will probably have a used one you can buy.

You could connect a hose from in and out on the rack and do without the pump and see if its to much ?

Thanks for the support and "bonehead!" comments (well, not so much the latter). Up to that item I was so careful about torquing everything just right too. I've learned not to wrench when I'm tired and therefore less patient and curious.


It's better now that I have a clue of what it may cost to replace and it's not a four digit figure.

Definitely going to check DC out- $180 plus $20 shipping to CA is the best deal I can find.

I think I may have used monkey muscles when trying to close the gap the distorted gasket was creating. Thanks for the torque spec!

:surr: guilty as charged. Unfortunately no one gave me tools or mechanics school- I'm enrolled in the University of Rennlist but got tired and likely violated the torque lesson.

Indy, man i bet you can fix anything with all those ideas. Think epoxy would hold up to ATF? I hate to experiment in fear it could lead to greater damage.

ATF is very mild stuff , it doesn't attack anything as far as I know .

Try contacting trophy here on RL - he just replaced the PS on his 993 with an electric unit. He might be willing to sell his old one.

I've got an extra pump in fairly good condition if you're interested. I took it off when it had just started whining a little and replaced it with one I got from another Rennlister. I had planned to replace the"ring"and veins to renew it, but the replacement has lasted for about 4 years now. Get a comparable price from salvage yards and let me know. Maybe I can save you a few $'s.

Maybe this is a good excuse to visit GB. Only thing is my kids would have to come as they are in love with One Direction and all the English boy bands. It would be cheaper to buy an new engine :)

Thank you Alarchsa after figuring out a 95 993 pump is not compatible, I think I've secured another working pump for $100. Originally I was of the mindset to just replace the broken piece but upon further consideration and not knowing the origin of the "bolt retainer" I'm opting to replace the whole thing.
