Default 964 interior rear panel question, do you know what this is?

I came across a 964 for sale a few days ago and noticed what looks unusual to me. I don't remember seeing anything like it before in a 964.
It looks like the back panel and shelf have been replaced by a factory option plastic panel.
Here's a photo, does anyone know what it is.

I ve never seen this before....... Are the raised pads foam-filled or solid?

Cheers,

Mark.

Never seen this before. Maybe a custom speaker mod?
Cheers,
Tore

If you look carefully you can almost see 2 speakers behind each one of the "seat backs". I think they are some sort of enclosure as you suggest.

I think it's some kind of speaker installation. I should know soon and report back!

It is definitely a custom speaker enclosure, not factory installed.

Very 80's. Maybe the centre console cassette holder still has T'Pau's greatest hits in there.... did you check?

The rear seats also has some form of button or **** i've not seen before at the top of the seat. Mine has red retract lock on the hinge low down. Not sure if this is bespoke too?

The shelf is odd looking, wonder how is looks side on through the 1/4 glass as it rises past the window.

I didn't notice the release buttons at the top of each seat, well spotted but from the picture, I can't make out any speakers, but I'm sure that's what this.
Might have time to look at the vehicle tomorrow, so hopefully all will be revealed.

Those seat buttons are found on later cars, they are the same as the 993. Odd arrangement with those speakers, I dont see how the seats would work...

This is definitely the optional "flux generator" for time travel. It was not a popular option at the time....
