Default Dumb Question for Today - Single Stage or Clear Coat?

Did Porsche use single stage or clear coat in 1991? Perhaps a bit more intelligent question is when did they start using clear coat?

I've done a lot of detailing (way too much) over the years and I know that single stage comes off on the rag when polishing. I don't get any paint on the rag when I polish my car except from the (stock looking) spoiler, so it looks like that might be single stage for some reason. Accident damage doesn't seem like a good reason because almost all repair shops would have used clear coat.

So, I guess my real question is: Why would most of my car appear to be clear coat and the spoiler appear to be single stage? Maybe the whole car was repainted in clear coat and they didn't do the spoiler?

Thanks,
John

I'm not positive but from my experience from detailing tons of porsches from the 90s it seemed that all the red 944's and 964's I polished that the paint came off on the pad. I can't recall any of the other colors doing so. I always just assumed the red were single stage. My stock spoiler ( white ) is clear coated for sure.

Its my understanding that most of the cars were single stage except the metalic colors which were clear coated.

My Carfax shows that my car was involved in a minor accident 4 months after the first owner bought it. All signs point to him being a meticulous PCA member - he owned the car for 18 years - and I'm thinking the whole car was repainted with clear coat at that time. Except the spoiler for some reason. Soon it will be all clear coat as I'm installing a freshly painted ducktail.

My '90 C2 is Black, and it does not appear to be clear coated. My polishing pads clearly show some black discoloration.

My white 92 is all single-stage.

Single Stage which is the reason the paint can restored.
