Today I looked at, but didn't drive, this 1990 C2:


The car has 98k miles and overall looks pretty nice. Except for the driver's side inner fender, which is shown in the pic below. Obviously something happened there (or is that normal?) as there's a lot of goop that is in excess compared to the other side. Looking past the wheel into the wheel well it doesn't look any different than the pass side. Is this something to be alarmed about? The car is at a dealer and they of course have no records.

Is that the front fender well? What does the panel look like on the inside of the trunk?

This looks like the frame rail ahead of the front wheel just above the battery. This is not how it left the factory!

Yes, that's it exactly. Sorry for the lousy picture. The other rail looks fine, and I didn't see anything else in that area that was clearly incorrect- of course I am also not that familiar with the cars. I didn't see any abnormal tire wear, though it was wearing a set of off-brand all-season tires

Would that mess likely be the result of a front 3/4 impact? It's a shame, because the rest of the car looks pretty good. They've been sitting on it for at least 4mo now, so I wonder if it's worth making a low ball offer (pending a PPI that shows everything else is fine)?

i can only imagine they didnt have any sprayable stone chip so used brushable sealer.
it would point towards a heavy impact to do any damage to that part.

maybe it was a poor effort from the previous owner to remove a bit of corrosion.
check the tub for signs of damage both inside the trunk and underneath,

I can't tell if the area is bent or if it is only has been repainted/had something applied to it.

My car was starting to develop rust around floor near the battery tray area and I went thourgh and treated the area and repainted it white. It wasn't even close to reaching high enough to the unibody beam tho.

We need more pics. Take more pics from the angle of Lemass pics. Remove all the carpet in the front. What does the front wall of the tub look like? What does the side wall behind the battery look like? Remove the front forward fender liner and look at the area behind the condenser, what does that look like? Shine a light through the front grill, up toward the consender side and see if anything looks weird there too.

In thinking about this more, if you really like the car, have a PPI done and then make an informed decision on how much you are willing to spend. As part of the PPI, you could take it to a body shop to have then give it a thorough examination, if you are concerned with possible accident damage.

Always have a body show inspect as part of the PPI if the dealer does not have one they have one they work with. 33% of 14 million cars in US have been in an accident. For me, I pick from the other lot...

Thanks for all the replies. I will try to get back for a closer inspection under some brighter lights. I agree that having a body place look at it would be ideal.

They are asking $22k, but have been sitting on it for months. It's a consignment place, however, so it's possible the owner is unwilling to drop the price.

$22K seems a little optimistic at 98k unless it has really good history...

im kinda new at this though, just been watching the market for a while.

looks good at first glance - are all the gaps nice and equal? Inside frunk check sounds like the right idea.

can I ask - are those rims chromed or just painted with a glossy anthracite? any pics from other angles?

if they want to sell you a potentially "had been damaged" car with no records and 98k miles, have then provide you with a free leakdown test and full results. They will likely say 'No', but then when they dont sell the car, they will relent...

22k is high unless you KNOW the car is not going to cost you another 22k...
