Hankook V12 vs Continental DW, Thoughts?
I'm buying my first pair of shoes for my, new to me, 964 with new wheels (17" Cup 1s). I'm torn between the V12s and the DWs. Here are my thoughts: from many searches it sounds like the V12 and the DW are more or less the same in both performance (off the track), longevity and price (+\- $20/tire).
Here are the main differences I see:
1) DWs are lighter (a few pounds per wheel),
2) V12s are quieter throughout the life of the tires.
3) DWs perform better in dry conditions and V12s in wet.
While I like the performance benefit of the lighter tire, this car is my daily driver and the noise issue will always impact me when driving. I will only notice the "performance cost" of the heavier tires in spirited drives on the weekend. This logic is drawing me to the V12s. Wish the DWs were quieter to get the best of both worlds.
Regarding the wet vs dry performance- it doesn't really matter- 8 months out of the year here in northern California it is dry and I don't drive hard when it is wet.

+ 964 on the Conti DW's being quiet. I have had mine on the car for over 10 000 Km and they are like new and still quiet as ever. As far as not performing in the rain, I have driven in torentional downpour and they performed flawlessly.

Conti's handsdown, do some research on Hankook "Shimmy." I think Hankook quality control sucks. The DW's are a great deal for the money and super quiet.

WOW! The Contis seem to be the one and also quiet. Thank you for all the feedback on yet another tire string.
crg53 has 10,000 km on them; are others getting decent mileage out of them?

I'm glad to put in a word for the V12's. Have used them on a daily 30 mile commute for 6 months at 36 psi all around (17" wheels) and have found their performance to be slightly better than Bridgestone RE760's. Quiet, little sign of wear, and my C4 has been rock solid during recent heavy rain. I don't drive aggressively so I can't comment on sports performance.

YaHoo...I have recently upgraded my suspension, brakes, and tires. I ordered a set of v12's and the shop had to send one back because it would not balance out...tirerack sent another out...no prob...the bigger problem occurred when I drove the 964 on a 100 mile test loop...as soon as I left the shop and threw the car from side to side...it felt very sloppy! I continued on and tried to enjoy the drive...the tires felt sticky and quiet, however, entering high speed corners (80mph into a 45), the car did not feel confident to me...it felt like the rear end wanted to swing out a bit before it would stick...in tight corners, they felt nice and sticky, but felt the rear end swing out that I wasn't comfortable with...so...when I got back to the shop...I explained the feeling...I drove another 964 with the PS2's...totally different feel...so I put the PS2's on my 964 and instantly felt the difference!...so, i had to send the v12's back and bought the PS2's...they are not as quiet as the v12's, but a much stronger sidewall! This is the problem...I feel that the sidewall is too soft for a heavy rear biased car like a 911! I also drove a 2004 Boxster base while my 964 was in the shop; it had the v12's on her...felt very good...the Boxster is a much better balanced car though! I feel the v12 is a good value if you want a commuter...if you want performance...spend the money on a quality tire! I know some will disagree with my experience...some folks here like the v12 just fine...me...no way! If you speak to a tech. at tirerack, not a sales guy, he might tell you what he told me...the sidewall, for performance driving, is way too soft! My PS2's produce a bit more road noise, but work great; dry or wet...I have LSD and these tires did great in light snow/slush. I have heard great things about the dw's as well as other options...just do your homework on the V12's...soft sidewall! I have posted my experience before...911's need great shoes! Hope this helps!
