Only an observation (in the process of updating my suspension ‘89), but comparing the Elephant rear kit you can see the mounting bolts go right through their top plate (as do the original top mounts) and the below spacer with its cutaway, while the advertised spacer has inserted bolts. This may be OK, just an observation. Finally what takes up the additional space is the sleeve, not fitted yet. Old mounts partially in view out to the right of the pic (stuffed).

Do you have a link to the Elephant rear kit? I can't seem to find it on their website. Thank you!

Here is a better pic. I don’t think the web site shows the perch and spacer...

Bump on this thread. Has anyone used the adapters on an early car with later model shocks?

Bump for someone who must have an answer to this. If not, I’ll be the guinea pig and when I’m ready to do my suspension next year I’ll go down and see them in person in Santa Clara as that’s pretty close to me.

My 1990 C4 was fitted with RUF Bilsteins. One kept on leaking so I ordered a new set of B6.

Given the rear tower looked like the early configuration I ordered early shocks. They do not fit as the RUF were fitted with later top mounts and adapter.

If someone has the measurement for the later car B6 rear shocks I can check those against the RUF Bilsteins which did fit with the later top mount and an adapter. That would give confidence it’s a solution.

Hi John,

I have my old HDs (i.e. B6s) sitting in the garage collecting dust so here are a few quick pics, just let me know if you want more. The body measures exactly 39cm or ~15.36" to the center of the bushing (camera angle makes it look like the tape measure does not line up but it did). Part # is also shown.

Snap. The RUF Bilstein body also measures 39cm to the centre of the bushing.

how about the measurements for the exposed shaft and threaded portion? I suspect RUF Bilsteins are later car Bilstein HD with maybe changed valve rates.

24.5cm for the exposed shaft, looks to be the same as yours. Threaded portion on the body is 5.5cm, looks to be shorter than the RUFs.

Thanks. Bar a mm here or there they are close enough to assume that the new type hats and the spacer allows later shocks to be fitted to early cars.

Hi John, just to clarify, so for early model cars if you get later model top mounts and spacers you can mount any later model coilover to an early model car?

My experience with the RUF Bilsteins was good and while it's clear that they were meant for later 964s, they fitted my car with the later top hat and a special spacer. What I can't be sure about is whether the spacer etc changed the shock functioning e.g. shorter travel. I'd proceed cautiously. Just because my B6 fit it doesn't mean it's a total solution.
