Backdates and other lightweight and/or retro ideas

Longhood Friday is a wonderful tradition within the long-standing "Here are some random 911 pictures..." thread over at the Bird.

In honor of the 964, I'd like to start a thread dedicated to 964 backdates and other retro ideas. No doubt these are wonderful cars totally stock, but depending on the owner, they can also be uniquely modified with a define nod to the past. Singer, PS Autosport, DP Motorsports are a few companies that have produced high quality examples of what is possible.

So basically I'm try to organized all my retro 964 pictures in one location...and would love to see any pictures or ideas you have also?!

Interior or exterior. Retro seats, lights, gauges, ducks, mirrors, Fuchs, etc.

This will be my next project... either I find a longhood or I find a donor car and make it into a longhood... In the words of the famous philosopher, Wayne Campbell... it will be mine, yes! it will be mine!

Green one is stunning

Black one would look good with more appropriate wheels

Nice thread Jette

I am so bad at selling cars... will just add it and park it at a friends garage... I ran out of space years ago... that is, if the wife does not kick me out first...

951 is in Puerto Rico parked at my brother-in-law garage...
964 is at Fernando's (about 5 minutes from my house) parked waiting for a complete respray, tranny work, and rebuild of steering rack)...
'83 and '81 are in the the body shop... RSR comes home today
FIAT Spider is here waiting for me to finish it...
What is one more 911? :D
oh, and there is that Lotus Esprit that I always wanted to own... those seem to be coming down on price... maybe I can find an early one that needs a little bit of work and get it home on the inexpensive side...

But I will give them all away in a spot for a Miura... reason I play that dollar every week :D

you can park any of your "completed" cars in my garage anytime!

Not to try and rain on your parade, but...

Having had both a '73 and a '92 now, I've kind of decided that backdating a 964 is not a good idea. They are two different animals that are hard to merge successfully. Yes, you end up with a car that looks like an early 911 with the conveniences we've gotten used to. But you'll never be able to recreate the feel of those lighter, high-reving, torsion bar cars. My '92 is a ton of fun - loud, fast, hooligan fun with thumping torque and wide-wheeled grip. But it can also be a comfortable drive when needed. Sort of a velvet sledge hammer.

But to get the real Early 911 feel, the car's got a have the scream of high revs, the smell of that non-cat mfi (or carb) motor, softer torsion bar bounce to the ride, the old dash look, "two window" ventilation, etc. Best to find a roller or rough early car that you can play with and make your own. Especially if the R Gruppe aesthetic is what you are after.

Understand that I am not anti-modifying our more modern cars, I've got a stack of parts in the garage myself waiting to be put onto mine. But I think we need to expand on the heritage of what we have in the 964. Whether it is aiming for the Euro RS, 964 Cup or something wilder like a 3.8 RSR or RWB. The cars in your post I quoted here are more the direction I'd like to see the hot rod 964 crowd move toward.

Just my $.02. Other opinions may (and will) vary.

Singers are my all time favourite 964 conversion...unfortunately the prices do reflect the quality of their work.

Great post Tom, I completely agree and really like what you wrote.
You put it perfectly, I'm having a lot of "fooligan fun in my velvet sledge hammer". :D

Personally, I'm not thinking of converting my car...I just like looking at pictures of the converstion. I'm such a picture slut.
This tread is just a way of grouping some of the ideas and pictures together.

That said, some of these conversions look really, really nice so I do salute the creators' artistic efforts. People put a lot of love into 911s.
Stock, track car, RWB, backdate...amazing what you can do with a 964 (in air conditioned comfort)

I need to search and see if there's an 964 R-Gruppe thread already...

The problem with the 964 back dates I see are -

1. blackout window trims (can the black OEM pieces be chrome plated?)

2. oil & a/c line mess below the rockers, or should I say lack thereof

when those are taken care of though, they look great! (i.e., singer...)
