Latest Evo magazine: 964C2 beats 993..
Back to back tour through the 911 models, in probably the most respected drivers mag in the uk.
Can't remember the exact text (read it in WHSmiths), but clear summary is disappointment with the ol' slanty nosed, Toyota-built, multilinked mongrel, and happiness and contentment with the 964 (which we all realised was the best 911 years ago...)
Just sayin'...

Bought and read it yesterday. Indeed it is very complimentary about the 964. It comes out about equal top of all the generations tested. They liked it for many reasons; exhaust note, looks, how it drove (much better than the 3.2 and 993 in their opinion) and how its got performance that is still right up there with modern sports cars.
I'd love to find out who owns it as it sounds like it is a really good example of a C2.

Got a copy sitting on my lounge table along with this months GTPorsche and Total 911, all of them are talking about the changing opinion on the 964 and how it is now one of the best 911s to own.
Could the 993 be suffering from its own success? It is a very similar car to the 964 but commands a much bigger price. Maybe that's pushing the 964 values now. Personally I don't think its looks are holding up - where in the past it was more modern looking, as time goes on it isn't and it doesn't have the iconic classic 911 shape. That said, 993 C2S I love the look of.

And at what level of prep were all these cars? I mean I love 964s, but in either racing my own RSA or having a hand in several others from '92-'04, you kinda come to understand where they are in the pecking order. (If not familiar with PCA Club Racing rules, basically a minorly modified C2 ran in the same class as a stock 993.)
Ultimately, it was more about driver than anything else. Secondary was bucks spent. And we had some out here (RSAs) that had massive bucks thrown at them.

BTW the SC and 996 also came out very well in their opinion.

I really like 993's actually, I have friends with them - but I do prefer to look at them from behind. The cars I mean.
Next we'll have 993 owners coming on here saying that the magazine was running a tight, sorted 964 against a tired, baggy old 993 (the very thought..). But too late people, the rise of the 964 is upon us, join hands brothers and sisters, we have been overlooked for TOO LONG!!

I don't understand the shock that a 64 would offer up a more entertaining ride than a 993. The later car was certainly more refined, but not more involving. The article says much the same thing, the 993 feels slightly sanitised much as the 991 does compared to a 997.

All were rwd base models (e.g. the 996 was a 3.4), supposedly without mods but I doubt that they looked closely at how fresh the suspension, engine, etc was. There was no comparison of sprint times or lap times. The article is purely about the opinions of two Evo Magazine journalists that drove all the cars back to back on Porsche's handling circuit at Silverstone.

I challenge anyone to say a stock torsion bar car (raise your hand if you remember running such on P7s..........) is a fun ride. Lower/align/decent tires/larger rear torsion bars/properly ugraded and valved dampers, and you've got something transformed relative to a 996 that pretty much works fine off the showroom.
